Our imperial, Baltic-style porter is inspired by the strong, dark brews exported from Great Britain to Eastern Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rich and flavorful with upfront notes of chocolate, caramel and toffee.

Heavy Woods, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours black with a tan head (I didn’t get much of it because the bartender poured it all the way to the top). Aroma is chocolate, coffee, and a bit of roasted malt, along with some caramel up in there. Taste is slightly sweet, with somewhat bitter chocolate. Body is medium. Mouthfeel is nice. Carbonation is medium-low. Thicker than many European versions of course. Good

Bottle @ home, courtesy of my secret santa. Muchas gracias, Santa! Pours a hazy, deep brown appearance with a big brown head. A bit smoky, somewhat metallic, burnt malty, chocolate, light caramel aroma. Chocolate syrupy, light coffee, anise, vanilla, cola, a bit burnt/smoky flavor. Not as good as I was hoping for.

12 oz Bottle. Pours clear ruby black with a small tan head that dissipates quickly with some lacing. Aroma is chocolate and coffee, with a touch of molasses. Flavor is same, lightly sweet, light coffee bitterness, and a bit of astringence. Medium body.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma full of plums and other dark fruits. Sweetish flavor with caramel, light roastiness, dark fruits and a drier finish with hoppy hints. Medium-bodied.

12oz bottle. I hate it when Imperial Porter and Baltic Porter are used interchangeably. Deep, thick brown-black, thin beige head. Chocolate clove aroma. A pretty well-executed Baltic Porter, smooth sugary burnt chocolate tones, some raisiny dark fruit. Underlying pungent dark fruit. A real quality feel, as opposed to a lot of authentic examples. Well done, but confusingly marketed.

8/9/11/9/14/9

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 2/27/11

Aroma: The nose is fairly subtle with notes of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and coffee
Appearance: The pour is basically black, with slight hints of red and brown, and a small beige head
Flavor: The flavor is similar to the note, roasted, light sweetness, minimal bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium (leaning light for the style), smooth feel, soft carbonation
Overall Impression: Overall, this beer is solid, but not particularly exciting. I'm not sure what it is missing, but it is definitely lacking something. It's not a huge knock by any means, this beer is quite drinkable, but it just doesn't come off to me as top notch. I would drink this one again, but I wouldn't rush out for it.

Bottle. Pours black with off brown head. Nose of vanilla, chocolate malt and lactose. Plain. Taste is much better - creamy milk chocolate, roasted malts, roast coffee, nutmeg, vanilla beans and a sprinkling of spicy hops.
