Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Bottle bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours tiny hazy pale golden with a big frothy and fizzy white head that leaves some small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty, tiny fruity and tiny estery with crackers, wheat dough, lemon juice, star fruit, unflavoured yoghurt, minerals, dry soil, lemon zest and hints of doogh and banana peal. Taste is sour, salty, tiny malty and tiny fruity with wheat crackers, lemon juice, sour milk, doogh, hay, dry soil, minerals, lemon zest and hints of rubber. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, tart and light bodied. Finish is sour, salty, tiny malty and tiny fruity with wheat dough, lemon juice, doogh, hay, dry soil and lemon zest. Bit too heavy on the wheat dough maltiness but all in all a solid refreshing berliner.

Syrlig duft av høy og gjær. Dunkel lys gulbrun farge. Tynt dekkende hvitt skum. Sterk syrlid smak av lime og salt. Meget spesielt øl, ikke noe å drikke i mengder, men en øl en kveld innimellom går fint.

750ml bottle. Hazy, orangey golden colour with huge, frothy, collapsing, white head. Spicy and minimally herbal yeasty aroma with a fruity touch of peach. Taste is mildly tart, herbal yeasty, a even more ’backgroundish’ touch of peach.

Bottle split at the Bottle Shop, Bermondsey, 06/09/14. Clear light golden with a moderate off white covering that soon dissipates. Nose is oaky wood, vanilla, light melon, subtle florals, hint of caramel, citric rinse, peachy. Taste comprises butterscotch Angel Delight, kumquat, apricot, light acidity, subtle brett, lemon rind, mellow citrics. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a little sweet lick here and there. Decent ’Linner, a little sweeter and more candified than most.
