Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Draught at Lord Hobo, 9/1/15.
Nice, hazy gold with some deeper, bright orange tints and a surprisingly well-retained white head.
Holy crap, a really nice Bruery beer! They seem rather few and far between! Though maybe I havent had enough of the right ones. That being said, Sour in the Rye was excellent and this reminds me of that level of quality. As well as being one of the first American breweries to do a big output Berliner, so that’s cool too. Nicely tart lactic nose has actually a good deal of brett tartness as well, contributing limeskin and some various musty funk. Wheat is noteable, with no sweetness or mislpaced nuttiness/salt/seltzer, as some berliners have. No alcohol, of course, and no flaws.
The flavor is bursting wtih lovely brett and lacto. Tart, bright, balanced acidity and lime-like flavors with dusty, basement funk, dry wheat-like texture to add body without sweetness and a zesty, appropriate carbonation. Really f-in good! Will certainly drink more of their berliner offerings.

(Bottle) Pale yellow with slight head which disappeared very fast. First glass from bottle was hazy, third was cloudy, but most yeast remained in bottle). Slightly funky, slightly tart aroma. Light bodied with plentiful coarse carbonation. Sour, but in a good way, sort of reminiscent of a dry scrumpy (without the apples!). Some peppery spice, some farmyard, but mostly sour. Sour, interesting - glass I had rich and salty food as an accompaniment.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow with medium frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is strong citrus, brett, and dough. Thin mouthfeel, very tart lemon, brett, light dry finish, crushable, very nice.

Almost no head left, fully hazy yellow beer. Spicy, lots of citrus, very faintly farmyard smell. Citrus, even expressly lemon, with a strange finishflavour that reminds me of Lindenblossom. Again some very restrained spices, whilst the end is completely lactic acid. Light (but not too light) body, fine carbonation, dry and acidthinning. Fine, lacking the sometimes typical Bruery-over-the-top acidity, true to the style. Many thanks to LouisV!

750 old bottle dated 3/25/2013. color is mostly clear without any head at all. Aroma is light lemon peel, mildly funky yeast, light oak funk.

The flavor is tart and refreshing with a mild acidic note in the finish. Carbonation is a lower level with a extremely dry texture. Mild Brettanomyces yeast hints. Th flavor is very nicely balanced between tart and sour.

Old rating from Jun 08, 2011. Nice 0,75l bottle with crowntop. Thanks to kappldav for this beer! Very pale in the glass, no head, light sour smell. The beer in the mouth starts slightly sour, much less than expected. It continues with this light sour tone, that has a pineapple-like flavour in it. Quite interesting and unexpected for a Berliner Weiße. The mainpart of this beer is very smooth, mild, the sourness leaves the mouth and is nearly gone with the finish. A bit disappointing, but it leaves a mild-smooth mouth-feeling in the end. --> Great, light summer-refreshing beer. A bit lighter and less sour as its German counterparts. The only thing I complain is the price - my bottle says 13,50$ - (which is ~ 9,20€). In my eyes far too expensive for such a beer.
