Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Draft sampled at The Bad Apple, Chicago. Pours hazy golden with barely any head. Aroma of citrus, tart fruits, berries and light funk. Flavour is moderate to heavy acidic. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Small creamy shortlasting head. Aroma is weird, popcorn, hay, sulfur, grass, roasted grain. Taste is acidic sour, soda powder, sorrel, lemon, sour apples, chalk. Slightly dry mouthfeel. Fair enough, very strange one.

Bottle. Tart lactic lemon and wheat malt aroma. Cloudy yellow with a large, quickly dissipating white head. Sour lactic lemon, funky yeast, and creamy wheat malt flavor. Light body, lively carbonation. This was a very satisfyingly tart and wheaty Berliner, and hit the spot at the end of a really hot day.

Aroma: The nose of this one is fairly tart, with some yeast, and some mild fruit as well
Appearance: This one pours a cloudy golden color with a small white head
Flavor: The taste is very similar to the nose, with a nice tart, fruity, and yeasty flavor
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a nice mouthfeel, low ABV, and good drinkability
Overall Impression: This was some tasty stuff overall. It made for a nice Berliner, and the low ABV makes this one something you could easily drink a ton of. Good stuff for sure.

Tap at Gingerman during lazy Sunday. Pours cloudy yellow with soapy white head. Nose of citrus and wheat. Tastes lemony, of grass, bread crust, yeast, and light florals. Really refreshing and light.

750 ml bottle. Pours extremely pale hazy yellow with a quickly collapsing white head; leaves a ring of big-bubbly foam and some lace. Aroma smells like corn chips, along with some lemon and earth. Taste is tart and grainy, again, more than a hint of Fritos; finishes really dry. I’d give it a 7 on a 1-10 sour scale. Highly carbonated, medium to thin body. This is so much better than the last so-called Berliner Weisse I just had before this. The difference is huge. Crisp and refreshing. This seems like a brewery that would never put their beer in cans, but this seems like an ideal summertime camping/beach/fishing beer that would taste great from a can. You could session this bitch all night and still not be all that intoxicated.
