Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Tap. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head and nice lacing. Aroma is light funk, lemon, yeast. Flavor is light sweet, light light tart, with little funk. Light body and refreshing. Hugely drinkable on a hot summer day.

On tap at Churchkey’s Night of the Living Ales event. Poured a mostly clear yellow/light-orange color, perhaps close to straw... with a small wispy head. Aroma is sweet tart funk, nice carbonation, enjoyable. This one was pretty darn good.

Draught at the brewery with RBSG. Hazy, pale yellow liquid with small white head. Aroma of lacto, lemons, wheat and cereal/grain. Taste is dry and light to medium sour with notes of lemons and wheat. Light bodied with medium to high carbonation. Quite refreshing.

Bottle from Stop N Shop Coral Gables. It pours very pale yellow, with a light haze and a massive white head. The nose is wheat, farmyard, spice, sweat and manure. The taste is wheat, tart lemon, soapy dishwater, touch of spice and a lightly tart finish. Light body and moderate carbonation. Not great..... a bit thin, doesn’t smell great and tastes a bit too much like soapy dishwater.

75 cl bottle @ home, no BBE info. Rated on 28.06.2011
My first Berliner Weisse! Aroma is somewhat light with sourish apples. Flavour has sour and slightly tart apples with hints of sour cream, spices and floral notes. Good, could be even more sour though.

Berliner Weisse can be a tricky style to pull off well but this one did a quite credible job. From the 4/2012 3R6P tasting. +++ Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy very pale yellow color with a trace white head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was tart and lactic with notes of yogurt, lemon and sourdough bread. The flavor was tart lemon, Sweettart candies, yogurt and a touch of pepper. The finish was long lemon and Sweettart candies. Light to medium body. Nicely done.
