Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Not that I want to rate to style but this wasn’t as lactic sour as the 2 german versions of the style I have had, and it was fairly thin bodied in comparison to those beers as well. I know its low alcohol but those others managed to be low alcohol with some body. Otherwise it had a fairly nice lemony tartness, low to medium levels of sour. Finish was a touch herbal and dry. Pale yellow color, lightly cloudy, fizzy carbonation.

A hazed yellow weisse with a thin dissipating white head. In aroma, a nice lambic like offering with lactic acid, emon juice, epsom salts. In mouth, a tart lemony malt with lemon pulp, lactic character, a bit earthy, nice and refreshing. Bottle shared with GRM and ProbstK. July 24 2011.

750 mL bottle. Pours incredibly pale, more like champagne or ginger ale with a two finger, fleeting, airy, white head. The aroma is lemon zest, pineapples, bananas, and faint biscuity yeast. The flavor is powerfully tart. There is a fructose sweetness as well, but it is subdued. The finish is sour and a little musty. The body is light to medium. The palate is acidic and sticky, and the carbonation is very lively. The finish is long, sour, and astringent. Overall, a very flavorful and delicious beer, and one of the most interesting styles I’ve had.

Cloudy blond color. Nice aroma, wheat, citrus fruits, chestnuts; later, some plastic. Weak body, of course, citrusy flavor, limited acidity, but also a bit too much paper and corn flavor. Refreshing, but not true.
