Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Bottle, 75cl. It doesn’t look very much, quite ordinary and dull with it’s almost clear body, pale yellowish-golden color and the small white head. The aroma and flavor on the other hand, they’re on a completely different level. Maybe not world class, but certainly making this one a superb session beer. There’s a barnyard touch to the aroma, quite funky and slightly milky, and lots of smooth fruityness too. There’s a citrusy, fruity flavor with a funky touch, and the end is lemony without being very sourish. Some funky hints. Tart and medium to thin on the palate. A super refreshing, tasteful and quenching beer I’d like to have regular access to. Hopefully some Norwegian brewery will pick up the glove, there’s definitely a need for a Berliner Weisse here. Not only in summer, all year. 101126

Bottle: Poured a clear light bright golden color ale with a large pure white head with good retention and very good lacing. Aroma of sour and tart notes are very well balanced with solid malt notes. Taste is dominated by tart notes thought not overwhelming with great notes of malt and no acidity notes. Body is full for style with good carbonation. Very refreshing with great drinkability factor. Probably one of the bets beer I tasted from this brewery with great balance and refreshing factor.

75 cl bottle. Pale light gold with lace. Crisp, tart lemon aroma with lactic creaminess that is noticeable but light. Great citrus. Creamy palate with yogurt, lemon. Sourer than the 1809 I had yesterday. Very lemony. Light, not much sweetness either, though it has a cereal grain finish. Good summer beer.
