Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Biggish white head doesn’t last. Hazy very pale yellow body. Mealy wheaty soapy aroma. Dry-sour vinegary lemon taste with mealy wheaty notes. Thinnish body, filled out by protein. Mild mouthfeel. Dry lemony wheaty dusty aftertaste lingers. Decent, but can’t say I enjoy it very much. (0.75l bottle shared by gr0ve.)

Bottle: Pours a pale, opaque color that I can only compare to pear juice. A finger of bright white head is quicky gone. Nose is musty, dirty, straw, and florals. Very barnyard. At first sip, it is lightly vinous and fruity up front, brisk sour and tartness to finish. Wheat is present, but mild. Sour and tartness mellows as it warms making this 750 very easy to polish off solo.

Sample at the HSC Sour Beer Tasting on 06/19/2010: The beer is a hazy pale yellow color with a medium thin white head that burns away steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Funky, lemony aroma with some wheaty notes. Medium body with flavors of lemons, yeast, wheat and spices. The finish is tart and fruity with a slight vinegar note left behind. Above average overall, and was substantially better than the 1809 sampled before it.

bottle at mikkeller bar Cloudy yellow (first glass was clean yellow), huge smooth head that very soon disappears entirely. dry wild-yeasty (bretty) aroma, faint soursh, faint fruity. flaovr is citrussy salty sour, doguh, yeast, spanish champaigne, white wine. Interesting beer, quite citrussy and sour for a wheat, the flour or dough flavor is quite prominent. No idea if this is true to style, as it is my first berliner weisse (with this i have all styles ticked)

750 ml. Pale yellow body, cloudy. Bubbly white head mostly diminishing. Aroma of lemon peel, lime, hay, peach. Notes of sweat and cheese and a bit of mustiness. The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter and moderately acidic. It finishes lightly sweet, lightly bitter and moderately to heavily sweet. Light body, thin texture, lively carbonation. Nice fizziness on the tongue to compliment the sourness. Tastes of lemon, peach, dough, Band-Aid. Not complex, but refreshing. A good low alcohol, summer beer.
