Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Barnyard funky aroma with buttered popcorn and vinegar notes. Clear yellow, thin vanishing white head, consistent streams of carbonation. Strongly tart lime flavor which gives way to limey malt. Neat take on the style, but not as well executed. Still, I liked this very much.

Very pale and hazy. Thin head disappears very quickly (as per style). Wheaty aroma with actually a fair bit of pedio, maybe hints of apple and peach. Tart body. Lots of pedio - it just dominates this beer. Maybe a bit of apple, but on the whole not a pleasant drink and not to style.

courtesy of tpd975 pours hazy golden straw, white head. Aroma tart, wheat and citrus zest, grassy and citric nose. Flavors, effervescent, tart citrus mouthfeel, wheat, light cereal finish, yeasty light fizzy finish. Definitely a style I need to keep trying.

bottle at Fort Wayne tasting - Pours cloudy, pale yellow. The aroma has obvious lactobacillus along with citrus. The flavor is tart and earthy and the light body is a little on the thin side. Interesting brew. Not bad.

Bottle 75cl. @ Fastelavnssmagning, Ulfborg.Light unclear medium yellow color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white head. Aroma is moderate malty, lime, moderate yeasty, sour yeast, vomit, paper. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate acidic with a average to long duration. Body is medium to light, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20100220]

Pours pale yellow into a bowl. Bright white head quickly recedes to hug rim. Lactic lemon sour patch aromas. Sharp and tart upfront turning to a lasting marshmallow brett finish.

Bottle @ Fastelavnssmagning, Ulfborg. Pours hazy pale yellow with a creamy egg white head and lacings. Nose is musty, citrus and wheat. Tart flavor with some wheat and lacto. Very dry. A bit thin palate. Refreshing!

Sour aroma with a tiny white head. Sourish aroma with hints of lacto and wheat. Flavour was sour with lacto, wheat and sour fruits. Finished sour.

Bottle, 3.1%. Mildly tart CO2 aroma. Cloudy pale yellow colour. Small frothy chalk white head. The flavour has a nice lactic tarness. There seems to be a little paper or cardboard, but the beer is actually a good example of a Berliner Weisse. Good and refreshing for a Berliner Weisse, but unfortunately I do not care much for the style.
