It is a great joy to see so many chef’s getting more and more enthusiastic about beer/food pairings. In the Netherlands we enjoyed inspiring beer dinings at ‘Dertien’, a superb restaurant in Rotterdam. That’s why we immidiatly said ‘yes!’ when chef Pepijn proposed a special brew to enforce this trend. We brew a hazy purple weizen - ish with elderberries. The pairings to go with this beer are much awaited! It’s name is a tribute to the legendary Jimmy Hendriks and Prince. Purple Haze & Purple Rain

Cloudy deep purple beer, creamy huge pink head, little stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: blueberries, fruity, bubble gum, more fruitiness, yeast, dirty. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: fruity, lots of blueberries and elderberries, bubble gum, more fruitiness, yeast, little dirty. Aftertaste: definitely elderberries now, fruity, some tannins, bit yeasty, nice one!

Draft at de Molen. Purple pour. Aroma of cassis, mild tart, wheat and grainy malt. Taste has cassis berries, soft wheat, yeast, sweet fruit and a malty finish. More like a mildly tart weizen than a berliner, bit it’s nice.

Bottle, bottled 10.04.17 (from speciaalbierpakket.nl). Looks like smoothie: dark purple with light purple head. Smells also like smoothie: fruity, berries, sourness. Flavor is sweet, sour, wheat, fruits, berries. Finish is wheaty-floury with a bit of alcohol tingle. Overall: good in a hedonistic scale, although it really doesn’t look, smell or taste like a proper beery beer.
