“This is a beer that has lost its way, like a young skull with no real identity. An innocent pale beer that wanted more. A strong hoppy IPA that fell in with the wrong crowd, tempted in by the darkness, by the decadence of the imperial stouts. Sweet, thick and roasty, yet high on hop aroma and flavour. This is something you have never tried before, and possibly should never try. But you will, you will give in to temptation, and you will succumb to its influences, come to the dark side.

Drink fresh for a big hop hit from the Simcoe, Citra, Pacific Gem and Columbus dry hops. But a complex malt backbone including chocolate malt, roasted barley, oats and what, along with honey and molasses, means this beer will age well.”

Bottle at home from The Bishop's Cave. Lovely pour and a strong yeasty nose that quickly dissipated. There were no discernible hops to the taste, but this was nearly a year old so that is hardly surprising. The flavour was complex malts with coffee, soy and a well balanced bitterness that made me smile. The mouth feel was velvety and oily and coated my mouth in loveliness. The alcohol was evident, but added a layer to the flavour. A very good imperial stout.

(330ml bottle from Systembolaget, bottled 06/06/17) Pours effectively black with a moderate, well-lasting dark tan head of fine foam with lots of lace. Aroma definitely showcases hops despite the age, lemon peel, mango, orange, raisins, chocolate malt, honeyed sweetness, toast, wafers, black olives, light coffee. Flavour is actually pretty sweet and fruity up front, oranges, plums, sweet lemons, golden raisins, floral honey, brown sugar. Drier and more bitter towards the back, ashy roast, bittering hops with a pine touch, black olives, spent coffee, unsweetened chocolate. Dry finish with moderate bitterness. Lighter body for style, average carb with a soft creamy feel, no alcohol. Feels much more like a black IPA than an imp stout with heavy hopping, roast is in the back relative to the hops. Quite solid for style.
