A true "British" India Pale Ale should be light amber in color, and have a earthy, fruity hop aroma; with a wild whip crack hop bitterness, held together by a sturdy malt flavor with a strength of at least 6 percent. Chuckanut Brewery’s British IPA goes down with incredible ease.
In 1790’s, the British were established in India and needed beer, which was considered a staple in every household. Brewing in India was impossible; it was too hot (this was before refrigeration) and beer that was shipped overseas spoiled on it’s journey. George Hodgson, a brewer who was known for brewing the style of Pale Ale created a stronger version of his pale beer by increasing the alcohol content, fermenting the beer fully, and adding hops to hogshead (the barrel they shipped beer in) all this made the beer sturdier for the voyage. Hodgson’s India Pale Ale arrived in Calcutta in fine shape-clear, strong, and bitter, with a big resinous hop aroma. The India Pale Ale has become famous throughout Europe as well as the United States.

Tap at Beerfes Tokyo. Brownish, quite clear and with only a little foam. Aroma has some light burnt caramel, sweet and mixed with hops. Fruit basket. Taste is relatively dry, hips and pine resins, needles. This kind of beer. As a whole this is a good example of an American beer, nice long IPA.

Draft - Loght grains and earthy hops. Clear gold with a nice white head. Up front vegative bitterness with some pale malts and a very dry finish. Bitterness is a bit much for me in this English style.

Draught at Tadg’. Amber color. Big, fruity nose, gumball and candy. Sweet, fruity flavor, nothing wrong with it but really undistinguished. A bit dull.

As part of a sampler tray during my visit to Bellingham Medium golden with a huge lasting white head..the enitre glass is coatd with the lacing as it recedes. Pretty mild aroma for an IPA, plenty of hoop flavor though and q flavoruite bitter. Sweet and light malty. A pwerfull kick but not quite the classic west coast IPA I typically expect. Claims to be more of the British variety but kind of lands in between I think.

Sampled on tap at Chuckanut Brewpub, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is lightly fruity, English hops and grainy. Flavour is barely hoppy, with grains - very pale ale-like. Standard and boring.

Light amber color, hazy; creamy white head, with nice lace. Nice aroma of hops, fruity (grapefruit and other citrus) and sweat; tea. Decent malt and caramel flavor, but missing some better malt character; balanced hopping level, the hop provides only moderate qualities; there is some light sweetness that blends well together.
Pleasant, not impressive though.
