Score
6.96
ABV: 11.5% IBU: - Ticks: 45
Measuring between 10 and 11% ABV, depending on the year, this barleywine was Real Ale's first seasonal product. It is uncharacteristically smooth for this style of beer, as it is created with five different kinds of hops. It also displays a rich malt character, and the healthy portion of hops gives it a distinctive dry and balanced finish. Sisyphus Barleywine Style Ale, weighing in around 480 calories per 12 ounce serving, is not for the faint of heart. Makes a great nightcap!

Bottle @ home. 2010 vintage. Cloudy, ruby orange appearance with a light brown head. Very rich, dark fruity, red plum, caramel, toffee, and booze in the nose. Very rich caramel malty, toffee, dark berry, piney hoppy, somewhat boozy flavor. Not bad but very rich and strong.

Gelungen! 8/12/11/11/6/12

7/2/2009 2007 Vintage Received in trade from RickSawyer and BeerZack, thanks for the opportunity. I’ve had this beer, 2007 vintage multiple bottles from different sources and each time I open a bottle it is infected. I opened two tonight to be sure. Opens with a crack and a foaming, have to pour quick so as not to spill any. Pours a dark golden/copper color with a huge bubbly off white head that sticks around forever. I can smell the phenolic as soon as I crack one open. The nose is so Belgian-esque, spicy phenolics solventy, medicinal. Drain pour for me If I ever manage to get one that isn’t clearly infected I will revisit this.

2007 bottle Opens with a very weak pfft. Clear, viscous amber that manages to produce a small ring of foam, other wise it appears to be almost still. Weak malt aroma. Lightly sweet with some hop bitterness at the end. Not overly complex. This is decent with no real flaws or detractors, but when compared to all of the other good BarleyWines, this falls below average.

12oz bottle. 2008 Vintage. Pours a hazy, mostly translucent, orange, copper amber with a thin, creamy, heavily lacing off white head. Nose is nice and doughy, malty, crackers, biscuits, brown sugar, orange zest, orange blossom honey, lightly floral. Flavor is sweet, sugary, brown sugar, honey, pale malts, crystal malts, flower petals, light tropical fruits, some lemon zest, a touch of pine tar. Finish is full bodied, sticky sweet with just a touch of lasting bitterness. This could have gone for several more years. Lacked a touch of complexity.

A 2008 bottle thanks to Maltomeal. Pours a clear amber gold with an off-white head. Looks like a lighter ale but pours quite thick. Aroma has a nice balance of malts with sweet grains, bread and caramel with a slight undertone of citrus hops. Flavor is a bit dry with note of caramel and sweet bread and a nice bit of hops in the finish.

From tap at Toronado, Barley Wine Fest 2010. Pours almost clear and golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is light spiced and dry malty. Fruity and slight off note. Fruity and hoppy into the finish. Light spiced touch and medium dry.
