Measuring between 10 and 11% ABV, depending on the year, this barleywine was Real Ale's first seasonal product. It is uncharacteristically smooth for this style of beer, as it is created with five different kinds of hops. It also displays a rich malt character, and the healthy portion of hops gives it a distinctive dry and balanced finish. Sisyphus Barleywine Style Ale, weighing in around 480 calories per 12 ounce serving, is not for the faint of heart. Makes a great nightcap!

2008 Bottle - thanks Jordan. Poured a glowing orange amber with a thin white head. Smells sweet with citrus, caramel, and faeded hops. Smooth caramel and citrus blend and retains a nice citrusy/caramel sweetness. I really enjoyed this overall.

2008 bottle, pours a hazy reddish orange with a tall frothy tan head, good lacing, beautiful looking beer. Really nice cascade hop nose mixed with carmel malt and orange notes. Sweet toasted malts, orange and a mellow hop finish. Mouth is nice with light carbonation, creamy texture. Really nice barley wine that kind of bridges the gap between American and English. I would love to have more of this......480 calories or not!

bottle 2007: pours cloudy orange, thin white head, golden lacing. Aroma and flavor, caramel malts, grain, light wheat and bitetr hops. Hints of chocolate, low carbonation with a sweet floral finish. 2008 bottle: same color, cloudy orange, head was a lot thicker. Aroma and flavor had more pronounced hop profile, a little sweeter than ’07 version, and caramel with a thin hoppy presence.

Bottle courtesy of Pinkzambia Lovely hazy light orange amber with a thin but dense cramy light tan head that actually had to be coaxed a bit with a high "dribble-pour". Delicious candy carmel dominates the aroma Flavors are mainly sweet malts and just enough IBUs to balance. Just noticed this is a 2 year old bottle. That might account for the diminished bitterness and enhanced sweetness. Smooth palate and light, fine carbonation.Very nice

2007 bottle from ericandersnavy. Thanks much for what, to me, is a beer from the middle of unknown lands. Pours reddish amber with a minimalist off-white head that didn’t stick around. Aroma is floral and caramel. Strong enough to pause my senses. Full bodied, and a bit sticky. Very slight carbonation. Flavor is caramel, with some dried fruit aspects. Hop is floral, mildly bitter. Still, it’s dryish. I type that while sugar swirls in my mouth. Still seems accurate though. Does make a great nightcap.

Bottle 2007 sad to say this bottle was infected. A little sour. But I still sipped it down. Pours out a amber topped with a small head. Aroma was of citrus and sour notes. Tast more of the sour but some good rich malts. There was some sweetness also.

2007 12 ounce bottle courtesy of mar. Thanks! Pours a hazy orangish brown color with almost no head. Aroma of toffee, caramel and citrus hop notes. Taste is toffee, big earthy and citrus hops and a cheesy note. Medium bodied.

Bottled, brought by a friend of NoiZe. Cloudy orange color, short off-white head. Aroma of hop, bit yeast, horseblanket. Bit yeasty bitter taste, sweet, bit sugar, slight sourish. Strange and unbalanced.

From peter. Awesome aroma, big heavy fruity caramelized malts, with a dark bready fruitiness ala fig newtons, plus a graham cracker pie crust. Ruddy amber color, no head, very light carbonation. Flavor not as complex as the nose, dominated by a sweet bready/cookieish malt, and a slight alcoholic bite in the finish - which would be hard to mask at 11.5%! Full rounded palate. Nice but I probably should have cellared it another 2-3 years.

Rated June 2008. Courtesy of lb4lb via trade. Pours with initial explosion of foam upon opening with slightly hazy copper body and thin off white head. The aroma is pretty big with odd tart fruitiness, mild malt sweetness, over attenuated honey and urine. The odd tartness and urine notes seems out of place (maybe I didn't need to include here) and creates a very different aroma compared to most barleywines I've had. The taste isn't nearly as tart and has sweet malts to start followed by fruity tartness that enters early and only becomes more tart as the experience progresses. I get a hint of caramel too but it is far too meek a note
