Next to L’Ermitage and Beerstorming, another new Brussels craft brewing project with interesting ideas; this is their first and so far best known beer, tasted from tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Lacing, creamy, stable, completely closed, snow white head residing over a lightly hazy, peachy orange blonde beer with lively fizz. Dank and at first not very inviting ’old urine’-like hoppiness in the nose, fortunately gradually unveiling a more flattering character of passion fruit, yellow kiwi flesh, warm toast, wet hay, fermenting apples, overripe gooseberry, old orange juice, biscuit. Lively fruity onset, hints of mango, passion fruit and green banana, definitely non-Belgian with a typical APA profile, though an estery aspect remains present; smooth and slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Pleasantly caramelly and subtly toasted maltiness, under a growing hop character yielding retronasal hay, mango and passion fruit aspects as well as establishing a resinous, but soft bitterness, stretching over a long distance in a mild and gentle way, as is to be expected from an APA. There are still not many examples of this style in Belgium so comparison with other Belgian APAs seems a bit pointless, but in any case this is a modern, 21st-century, quenching session beer. I preferred this over Ermitage’s Lanterne - that other new and modern style Brussels pale ale - tasted right next to it. In any case it’s exciting to observe how Brussels is gradually gaining an own identity with these internationally oriented beers, cleverly positioned next to the more traditional Belgian style ales in places like Moeder Lambic and others.
