This classic handcrafted ale, brewed with generous amounts of American hops, including Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo has a complex character and is very hoppy in both flavor and aroma. By using barley malt, Munich malt and crystal malt, this IPA is a delicious medium bodied beer bursting with flavor. A true India Pale Ale. Contract brewed for Costco by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company under the brewer name Hopfen Und Malz (for the west coast market) and since mid 2009 by Matt Brewing as "New Yorker Brewing Co." (for the east coast market). Currently brewed at Stevens Point.

Tea, cooked vegetables, and cereal grain nose, sawdust also present with perhaps some honey. Clear deep amber, thick head. Mild dried leaves, a little cardboard, stale malt. Not much in the way of hops. Meh.

12oz bottle from my BIL
Drank from the bottle at night while burning a brush pile. Pine bitterness and caramel. OK, but I like the amber better.

Bottle. Rich yellow color, off-white foamy head, faint hops aroma, weak hoppy taste, fairly abrupt finish. The hops aroma and taste is very weak for an IPA, disappointing.

At a party: Pours amber with a whitish head. Aroma is nondescript hops and corporate malts. Taste is bitter, but the hops lack any real good flavor or anything like that. Kind of sweet and sticky in an unpleasant way. Really grudgingly mediocre.

Bottle - Overall a dissapointing beer that is only barely better than the huge macro’s. I would have expected some hops and bitterness but what I got was just bad. Not really worth the work to describe in detail, just avoid.

Clear amber with a pale beige head. Kumquat, grapefruit, pine and caramel aroma - plenty of the latter. Sweet with lots of caramel, but nice citrus flavours and some pine in a moderately bitter finish. A little too sweet and fairly plain but more than acceptable.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a medium off-white head that leaves decent lacing. Aroma is metalic, pine and a bit of citrus. Flavor much the same, a bit of malt give light sweetness and medium metallic bitterness in the finish. Kind of meh...

12oz bottle pours clear copper with thin dirty white head of foam. The aroma has resiny sort of lime peel and grapefruit pith notes mixing with some roasted malts and biscuit like malts. It seems these malts and hops don’t go too well together. The taste is sadly similar as I get some resiny bitter vaguely citrus hops blending bluntly into combative malt notes that are somewhat roasty. This does not come together very well but it does deliver a decent level of bitterness if that’s all you’re after.

12oz bottle. Orange-brown with a foamy off-white head. Piny orange resinous aroma...a touch rancid. Factory IPA, soapy caramel. Not really that enjoyable.

Bottle from Kyoto Costco. Nice citrus hop aroma, with underlying caramel. Grassy, lemon. Deep copper color with a low, fine head. Nicely hopped, grass, citrus, quite bitter actually. Light caramel malt, with a long, bitter finish. A good old-school IPA, refreshing, clean, tasty and straightforward. By far the best of the mixed cas beers.
