The Chimay Red is the oldest of the Chimays. Its coppery color and sweet, fruity taste make it a particularly tasty dark ale.
In the 75 centiliter version, which is in existance since 1978, this beer is also called La Première.

75 CL corked bottle from my cellar. Pours dark reddish brown, slight fizz that disappears quickly. Smell is pretty light. Most of the dubbel style note has faded out, but it hasn't turned. Taste has similarly faded, or maybe I'm too used to the thick malty American versions of Dubbel styles. Very wine-y overtures, with a bit of malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit light, but wine character keeps it worthwhile.

Old rating - Just realised that the Rouge & Brune are the same as stated here (& confirmed on Chimay web site) as I've had them several times. Outstanding Dubbel.

Ahh chimay - the biere that introduced us to trappistisme. Can’t believe I’m finally getting around to rating this guy. Pours a lighter shade of dark brown. Less head than I remember. A great balance of fruitiness and dark sugars ensues. Well done.

In my opinion, I prefer the blue and the white chimay. This one is pleasant, sweet, caramel, better to drink it not so cold. Drinking it in 2016, a long time ago.

Ok. For my 100th beer I wanted something special. This is it. May not be the best trappist out there but "for the money" it’s great. Recommend this one as a "seat down and sip two or three beer" types. Love it.

From Sep 2006
Poured from caged and corked 750ml bottle(cork says 2006) a cloudy rusty brown with a huge head of foam that just won't quit. Lacing abounds!
The smell is of spice, yeast, and sweet malt with a touch of citric fruit.
The taste has some caramel sweetness up front with a splash of dark fruit, mainly plum but also fig. Midway through, the sweetness comes back with some citrus bitterness that grows right through to the finish. Nice taster and quite easy to drink.
Bottom line: Very nice Dubbel that should not be overlooked. I recommend it!
