33cl bottle. Pours a deep amber-red with a nice little skimming of froth on the top. The nose has burnt biscuits, treacle and some sultanas. The taste is burnt ginger biscuits with currants, then a dark chocolate note on the end. The palate is medium bodied and beyond with a thick-ish texture and a reasonable finish - good length but could have been more tapered! Overall, a nice winter ale.

Bottle. Deep red with slight beige head. Aroma has hints of chocolate and perfume. Medium body, creamy with good carbonation. Fruity, tangy start moving through rich toffee with peppery notes to a dark malt finish. Overall, really very drinkable.

From a 330ml bottle on 3/6/2010. Has a sweet chocolate, coffee and brown sugar aroma. Tastes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, a little coffee and touch nutty. The flavours are balanced very nicelyby a firm bitterness on the end. A lovely winter beer which has become a bit of a fave. Rating 3.7.

Re-rate on 24/7/2015. From a 330ml bottle, bottle just labelled ’Doppel-bock’. I have continued to imbibe this on a semi-regular basis in recent years and remain a real fan. My experience with most Monteith’s beers has been fairly underwhelming, but this is a notable exception. Really malty and chocolatey - very quaffable and quite delicious, with a pretty impressive nose. Vastly under-rated on here.

Bottled. A chestnut-brown beer with a lazing off-white head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of brown sugar, bread, malt, and nuts, as well as lighter notes of alcohol, leading to a dry nutty finish. Nice one.
