This full-bodied dry stout bottled in County Carlow, south-west of Dublin is based on an authentic recipe first introduced around 1740. Its taste was said to make grown men weep for more! Its unique blend of roasted malts, grains and bitter hops ensures a deliciously balanced and smooth flavor.

Bottle at ChrisO’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2011. Clear, brown-black pour with a sturdy, off-white head. Sightly lactic nose, some cocoa roast. Nice flavor, modest chocolate, mild roastiness, slight milk cocoa. Light bodied with average carbonation. Slightly roasty, dry finish. Very easy drinker.

Gespannt öffne ich die Flasche des IPA’s und erwarte einen vollmundigen Hopfengeruch – Fehlanzeige. Auch der erste Schluck zeugt nur wenig von einem IPA, es ist zumindest ein sehr mildes mit deutlichen Einflüssen eines „Bitter“. Schwach malzig-hopfiger Antrunk, der Hopfen wird nur noch wenig stärker und wird bald von der bitteren Note überholt, die sie ursprünglich nachgezogen hat. Dennoch spielt die Hopfigkeit im Mittelteil noch eine relativ große Bedeutung während sie im Abagng absolut unwichtig scheint. Nur noch eine leichte Grasigkeit ist feststellbar, sonst regiert hier eine mittelintensive Herbe und eine eher schwach ausgeprägte Würzigkeit. Frisch, der Hopfen zeigt sich noch einmal indirekt. 7/9/8/9/12/9

500ml bottle. Pours pitch black with a thin head, that didn’t last. Aroma is faint, but is roasted malt and some licorice. Roasted malt to start. Lots of roasted coffee and some licorice on the dry finish.

Dark brown, okay pillow of head but not dense enough. Aroma of wet burnt barley and water. Taste is an odd mix of malt and roasted barley, like a half-guinnes half-spiced sout concoction. Doesn’t taste right. Doesn’t work for me.

50cl bottle from M&S Liverpool. Black with dark beige edges, but virtually no head at all. Liquorice style aroma with some roasted malt aroma. I really don’t like liquorice and this is very liquorice-y. So not my favourite stout, and the carbonation makes the mouth feel really thin. Not one of my favourite stouts.

Bottle 500ml.Clear dark brown color with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, coffee, creame vanilla, light to moderate roasted and burnt. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, artificial - cheap commodity. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20091230]

Bottle from marks and sparks. Pours black with a tan head, last a while. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, caramel. Nice nose. Flavours of malts, some hops, coffee, smoke. Finishes dry and hoppy.

15th July 2008. Label says brewed with Carageenan. The interweb reveals this to be a seaweed extract commonly used as thickeners in the food industry!! Mmmm! Smooth and creamy but full of lively dark malt bite and quite a bitterish hop finish. Plenty going on!

50cl bottle. Deep chestnut brown in colour with a dense off-white head, fading fast to leave a ring around the sides of the glass; richly roasted malts giving chocolate and smoke aromas; light to medium body with a dry feel, and some chocolate and coffee notes; the finish is dry and silky. An excellent stout.
