Truly a ground breaking beer, this Barrel aged Rauchbier was an attempt to replicate the flavors present in Islay Scotch Whiskey. We used Munich malt as a base and added copious amounts of Beechwood and Peat smoked malt, which provides the intense smoky and earthy peat flavors found in Scotch. Then the addition of Alderwood smoked salt lends a crisp brininess that is reminiscent of the sea air in the Islay region of Scotland. Aged in used Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrels to give an intense caramel, vanilla and whiskey flavor.

Bomber shared by Marcus. Poured trnaslucent golden amber with a slight white head. Smells like smoked , oaked cider. Med body or better. Flavor is more single malt than bourbon. Tasty smoked ale.

22oz bottle thanks to Travlr
Pours cloudy light amber with a medium off-white head, some lacing. Aroma is woody, smoky and bourbon. Flavors are woody, ash, whiskey, salty and vanilla
Wow, this is a great smoked beer. Well balanced, just the right amount of barrel aging.

Bouteille 65cl de Bierhhale Dekoninck, splt with Tomaz. Light gusher.

Bottle. Hazy, dark glowing golden body under a dense, finger-thick head. Lightly smoked aroma with bakers yeast, some pale malts and a touch of fruityness. Mostly fruity flavor, a nice bitterness in the back, with some smoke notes and a yeasty touch. The peat is just lurking in the far back along with the alcohol. Lasting finish with some warmth. Full body, pleasant carbonation level. Sure interesting, but not my kind of beer. 141018

650ml bottle. Clear copper colour with average to huge, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lasting, off-white head. Complex aroma delivers subtle fruity "original beer" notes of peach, nectarine, mirabelle, slightly surpressed by Islay Whiskey notes of peat, a touch if TCP, additional ’backgroundish’ woody and vanilla hints of BA. Taste is caramel malty with Bourbon notes of vanilla, oak and leather, a touch of peat and TCP; long lasting, dry, oaky, and peaty finish. Very well balanced, assiduously and gently composed, not overdone in any direction. More peaty than really smoky.
