Courtesy of markwise. Pours deep dark murky muddy chocolate with thin tan head. The aroma is a musty rich mix of earthiness, roastiness and a touch of coffee. The taste begins with a sweet slickness rolling into dark roasted malts, a couple of short pulses of chocolate and then coffee around the edges. This achieves a pleasing and interesting profile as it heads from slick soft sweetness to more robust roastiness into the finish.

On cask as Velvet Merlin. From what I’ve heard this isn’t different from the Merkin. Pours with a lasting off white head over a murky deep brown body. Aromas of wood, brown sugar, cola, molasses, chocolate, earth, fudge and vanilla. Flavors of brown sugar, coffee, chocolate, wood, toffee and molasses. Really smooth and creamy. Light bubbles.

On tap at Stone. Pours with a black body with no head and no real lace. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Taste is chocolate and floral with a light spiciness, light smokiness, and a light oak barrel character. Light bubbles and syrupy. Very enjoyable.

Dark brown with a medium to large deep beige and creamy head. Aroma had hard roasted malt, dark chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Flavour had burned malt, dark chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Sweet and full bodied. What a nice session stout.

Draught. Poured black with medium beige head. Much lacing. Aroma is oatmeal, roast and coffee. Full bodied roasty flavour, with a comforting oatmeal tinge. Lingering roast finish. Lekker!

Draft @ FoBAB 2009, Chicago, IL. Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty coffee aroma with some hints of chocolate. Roasted malty smooth chocolate and coffee flavor with hints of wood. Has a roasted malty coffee finish with hints of wood and chocolate in the aftertaste.

Opaque dark-brown with highlighting along the edges of the glass. The aroma, unlike the flavor, was fantastic. There are notes of chocolate, coffee, roasty malt, dry oak and a well-balanced bourbon flavor that meshed very well unlike some bourbon barrel-aged beers. The taste had all of these flavors, but they were far more muted. The bourbon flavor became almost watery. The feel may have been the real culprit. It was much too thin for a stout, much less a barrel-aged stout. A cask would likely bring out the creamy lush mouthfeel of the oatmeal stout. At any rate, it was still a good beer, and they get points for not overwhelming a relatively small stout with bourbon barrel-aging. Would be nice to see it in a cask. Edit (12/2/10): Bottle. I’ve been drinking this regularly since six-packs arrived and like it even better now. Excellent chocolate aroma/flavor, little bourbon. Smooth. Tons of flavor for the size. Great stout.

Very dark brown. Nice earthy, roasty character with dry, toasty malts. Full body. Smooth. Quite oaty, also sweet and maybe light butterscotch. A fairly moreish beer, something I genuinely appreciate in an oatmeal stout.

Draft at the brewery tasting room Nov 15, 2009 Nose of coffee, coffee, and more coffee, with hints of oak and bourbon. Black with brown edges and a medium tan, glass lacing head. Flavor is lots of expresso and caramel, finishing with more coffee. 8/4/7/4/15 3.8 12 oz bottle from Country Club 11/8/09 Nose is coffee and oatmeal, unlike the chocolaty BA Merlin I had Saturday at the 14th Release Party. The bourbon and wood hints I found in the regular draft version seem lost althogh the description claims the BA version is present according to the commercial description. Flavor is very oaty coffee with a hint of background bitterness. 6/3/7/3/13 3.2

Draft. Nitro. Blackish beer with a nice dark beige nitro head. Roasty aroma. Roasty, dark chocolate flavor with backing sweetness. Medium body. Lingering chocolate with a tannic astringency starting to show. Labelled as an oatmeal stout, but oatmeal well hidden.
