Aged in the second-use barrels that were once home to Kentucky bourbon, this traditional English-style barleywine possesses the subtlety of flavor that only comes from a barrel that’s gone through many seasons of ritual care. This year’s variant will pick up more bourbon barrel character by switching from third to second use barrels. The intricacies of the previous barrel denizens – oak, charcoal, hints of tobacco and vanilla, and that signature bourbon heat – are all present in this beer. Hearty and complex, Bourbon County Brand Barleywine is a titan and a timeline; a bold, flavorful journey through the craft of barrel aging.

Mixed review bottle (10/18/2016 13.6 ABV and 10/10/17 14.4 ABV) both courtesy of AirForceHops--thanks, Chris! Appearance is very dark brown, virtually opaque black, with no sparkle, cap of yellow-khaki head quickly fading to a ring with no lacing. Nice viscosity. Aroma is bourbon, dark fruit, caramel, wood with a mild almost buttery/creamy quality. Taste is nice mix of bourbon over caramel, raisin, plum, wood, vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth texture, soft, mellow carbonation with late pleasant alcohol heat in the mouth (2016 vs. 2017), finish as taste. Overall, an abundance of aromas and flavors all playing nicely. Alcohol well hidden for the most part.

Rating numbah 100! Once again I was lucky enough to be given free Bourbon County variations in the line for the Blåbær Lambic release. Pours coffee black with a tanned medium frothy head. Looks sooo good. Aroma of booze and raisins, chocolate and coffee. Some caramel malt and some sweet dried fruits. Taste is alike, more burned caramel and dark chocolate. Intense bourbon and caramel finish. Rerating 24/10/2014. Bottle. Pours murky brown with thin light brown edges. Aromas of raisins, barley, rye, oak, vanilla, caramel sweets, coffee and some chocolate. Taste is very sweet dark fruits, that trademark bourbon county whisky taste, coffee, rye, vanilla, some light chocolate, caramel.

Classic barleywine, lots of bourbon, all I expected. Malty, thick, rich and bittersweet. Bourbon adds a nice softness, nicely smooth mouthfeel. Proves again that a beer doesn't need additives to be great.

2016 bottle, 13.6%. Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Maltsugar, toffee, oak, soft herbal notes in the aroma. Full bodied, boozy. Candy sugar, malt, lots of bourbon. Toffee, oak and vanilla in the quite alcoholic, but also complex flavor. Massive, but I like it.
