In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.

We first started making casks of this beer in 2006 for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Since then, the beer has been both a fan and Team Stone favorite. We’ve brewed many small batches of it throughout the years and are always happy to make more!

Stone limited summer edition purchased in Vermont. Pours a deep brown-copper colour with a creamy beige head, great retention and lots of lacing. Sweet malty aromas with some mild roasted one in the background and light spicy spices. Hints of dark fruits. The taste is where you feel the chipotle peppers with some mild spicy warm feeling in the finish. Not sweet for the rest, but just light roasted malts. Wish I would of tried this one fresher as it seems milder, but overall another great brew from Stone.

Pours black with a tall tan head that quickly settles to a half finger. Aroma of roast malt and a touch of smoke. The flavor starts lightly bitter from roast malts. A bit of sweetness comes through after a few sips and the pepper takes a few sips before it too kicks in. Subtle difference from the regular, but it is there and does it nicely.

Bottle on the train to Portsmouth, IOW Jolly Day, from BD Online 24/08/14. Mahognay brown with a moderate light beige covering. Nose is roasted malt, brown bread, light cocoa, spice, not a huge aroma coming off this one. Taste comprises roasty tones, green pepper rub, spice, green chilli, dark toffee fudge, chocolate. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with subtle chilli heat. Decent enough chilli porter - well checked and not overpowering.

Bottle during the IoW Jolly, thanks to Colin. It pours deep ruby with a small white head. The nose is toasty, peppery spice, cocoa, milk chocolate, smoke, caramel and treacle. The taste is roasted malt, spicy, earthy, mild acidity, some bitterness, pepper, smoke and wood with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Alright, but not as much depth as I had hoped for.

So the best by date stamp seems to be smeared off a bit. But as I taste and smell this, I’m thinking this is okay.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a dark brown around the edges with a blacker looking body the further I look towards the center. There was some nice somewhat sticky lacing that ends up spider webbing a bit.
The smell didn’t start as expected, perhaps I had it a bit too cold. Anyways, it started off with a dark roasty chocolate with a deep smokiness to it. It took at least a good minute to warm up to let the chipotle to come out.
The taste was roasty, slightly sweet, slightly smoky and with a pop of heat from the chipotle to gracefully touch my taste buds with a fantastic complexity.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body. I want to drink it, but I also find myself sipping it a bit - sessionable, uh...hmmm...probably not, it seems there’s too much going on and I want to savor for as long as I can. The aftertaste is basically smoky heat leading towards a really nice sharp heat bite of a finish that comes across roasty and smooth. The carbonation is done extremely well for the style and for me.
Overall, big wow from me. Looks as if the date didn’t matter, hahaha, joke’s on the person who tried to smear it off.

Bomber. Aroma consists of peppers, tobacco, mild campfire, licorice, raspberry jam, wet rock. Pours dark mahogany with a medium beige head with decent retention. Taste is thankfully much more smoky than the aroma; also mid-level heat from the peppers, roasty, coffee, earthy, mild licorice; finishes slightly bitter. As it warms, the peppers become more pronounced, offering more vegetal jalapeno flavor (good in this case) and heat. Perfect palate. I love it; much better than plain old Stone Smoked Porter, which I’ve always thought was a lost opportunity.
