In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.

We first started making casks of this beer in 2006 for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Since then, the beer has been both a fan and Team Stone favorite. We’ve brewed many small batches of it throughout the years and are always happy to make more!

Bottle at home. Pours black, nose is light chocolate roast, smoky, hint of spice, taste is sweet chocolate, light peat smoke, soft spice at first, lingering burn the further you get into the bottle, just a tad thin. --- Beer merged from original tick of Smoked Porter - Chipotle Peppers on 09 Feb 2013 at 22:09 - Score: 6. Original review text: Bottle at Craig's. Little spice on the nose, not really any spice in the taste, little pepper. Needs more chipotle I think.

Large bottle from BrewDog Nottingham. Deep black Brown colour with a lasting foamy tan head. The aroma certainly has the smoky heat from the chipotle chilli. Taste is chocolate and roast alts, with a deep warm smoky finish, that didn’t overpower the beer.

Tap at Marciero. Wonderful nose of smoked malt and roasted peppers. Deep reddish-brown color. Great smoke flavor, peppers are hot but moreso are very flavorful and smoky, a bit like roasted red peppers. Still not my kind of thing, but this is well done.

Bomber from Brewer’s Haven. Pours inky black/muddy brown with small beige head. Faint pepper aroma on top of usual roasted malts. pepper becomes more apparent in the taste, with a little lingering spiciness on the tongue. Not quite as spicy as Crime, which is a good thing.

A clear brown Porter with a thin mocha head. In aroma, nice smoked chocolate malt with a peated character, musky notes, nice. In mouth, a sweet fruity chocolate malt with a bit of a burn, herbaceous hops, very nice. Bottle at OttBottleShare July 2014.

22 oz. bottle shared with Michael and Joe. Pours black, with practically no head. The aroma is light chocolate, some earthy notes, cinnamon, and celery. Sweet and roasty up front, with a mild, earthy, spicy warmth and bite through the finish. Medium body, smooth, and chalky. Overall, this is a pretty nice, mellow, and drinkable spiced porter. The peppers add a vegetal aroma, and a nice, low-grade warmth, but are otherwise pretty well integrated, and don’t overwhelm the beer. Not bad...
