In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.
We first started making casks of this beer in 2006 for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Since then, the beer has been both a fan and Team Stone favorite. We’ve brewed many small batches of it throughout the years and are always happy to make more!

Shared bomber, pint glass. Dark brown, opaque; medium head. Nothing notable in the aroma. Smoke on the front end of the palate and pepper on the finish--both were mild and worked well together.

Nice change from the pepper torture of their Crime and Punishment. Pours a dark brown-black, with frothy head that dissipates rather fast. Aroma of smoke and peppers, with some roasted grain to boot. Flavor is just the right level of muted peppers, with smoke, roasted grain, chocolate, coffee, and some underlying malt sweetness. Very satisfying beer. Would probably make a good accompaniment to grilled pork or burgers.

Bottle: Pours deep brown with red highlights and a short tan head. Dark chocolate/fudge aroma...slight chile tang and smoke. Taste is bittersweet chocolate and wood smoke with a slowly ascending jalapeno burn. Very rich and smooth...nicely and carefully crafted.

12oz bottle picked up at Wilburs in CO
Dark brown with a medium sized tan head and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, dried chocolate and green peppers. Flavors are roasty, chocolate and finished with hot peppers in the back of the throat
Nice, just the right amount of heat

Bottle. Pour is a deep leathery brown with a medium to large head and aromas of leather, chocolate and just a hint of peppers. Flavor is very nice... Maybe a little thinner than I would like, but the peppers are just enough to give it a little bite against the chocolate and leather of the dark porter. Smoke is pretty balanced but noticeable, especially early and late across the palate. Very nice.

From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a dark cola brown with a thin off white head. Enticing aroma of roasted chipotle peppers. Chipotle flavor not so strong as in the nose -- smokey notes more forward. A bit of chili kick in the finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a creamy, tan head about two centimetres tall. Aroma of peat - tons of it, earth, dirt, alcohol, mulch, cardboard and a hint of peppers - not much though. Medium-bodied; Earthy, peaty flavour with a mild note of spice, some pungent woodsy notes and a little sweetness at the end. Aftertaste shows mostly peat and mulchy herbal notes with a bit of soy sauce. Overall, a decent balance throughout, but the primary flavours are peat, more peat and earth - not a great porter in my book and one that really shouldn’t be sampled unless you liked Smoked beers a ton and want to try something new. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 04-August-2012 for US$2.69 sampled at home in Washington on 03-January-2013.
