In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.

We first started making casks of this beer in 2006 for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Since then, the beer has been both a fan and Team Stone favorite. We’ve brewed many small batches of it throughout the years and are always happy to make more!

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Sweet caramel and hot pepper aromas. Medium bodies with sweet dark caramel upfront turning dry in the smoky chipotle middle before the lasting spicy chocolate finish.

Bottle bought in NYC in August 2012. Black with a medium tan head. This was a soft one. Smoke, licorice, chocolate and coffee. The chili was there. Not bad but I hoped for more.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 9/26/2012. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with excellent retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing rings cling down the glass. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, smoke, chipotle pepper, light coffee, and light herbal hops. Damn nice aromas with great balance and strength. Taste of chocolate, caramel, smoke, roasted malt, chipotle pepper, coffee, toffee, citrus, and herbal hops. Light amount of citrus bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, chipotle pepper, light coffee, citrus, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance of classic porter flavor with the chipotle peppers; the heat does start to build up in the back as you drink, but it just fine with me. No cloying flavors on the palate at all after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming noticed on the finish, unless the peppers are masking it. Overall this is a highly excellent porter! Fantastic flavor balance with the special ingredient; very smooth to drink despite the pepper heat build up. Highly enjoyable offering; I hope it makes a comeback around here sometime.

Bottle thanks to timfoolery: Poured a thick black with red tints to edges, head was frothy tan beige with large bubbles. Aroma is light smoke with a strong jalapenos spice. Taste is deep smokey with lots of roasted characters there is that jalapenos pepper spiciness at the end of my tongue. Very well balanced and both work well together.

355 ml bottle @ OT. Pours dark reddish wooden brown with a small mocha head that doesn’t leave any trace on the glass worth mentioning while quickly dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet and spicy hot with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, green chili, smoke, chipotle, wood, moist soil, dark bread, cocoa powder and hints of moist grass. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter, tiny fruity and spicy hot with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, chipotle peppers, moist grass, burnt wood, dark bread, bitter chocolate, smoke, black pepper, rose pepper and hints of red chili. Mouthfeel is round, tiny watery, tiny hot and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and spicy hot with dark bread, chipotle peppers, burnt wood, cocoa powder, dark roast coffee, smoke and hints of red chili. Could have been heavier but is nicely spicy with tummy warming chipotle peppers.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that left decent lacing. The aroma was malty and a bit toasty with faint hot pepper and hints of cocoa and soot. The flavor was dryish and malty with notes of vanilla, cocoa and vague hot peppers. Medium length dry, malty, hot pepper finish. Medium body and a bit chalky. Ok.

Bottle from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Pours dark brown with a creamy light tan head. A deep inhale provides a plenitude of chipotle. With some smooth burnt malt. Near full bodied. Flavor is very chipotle with smooth burnt malt and a little chocolate. Chipotle and chocolate! Wonderful combo. It finishes smokey chili in a rather light way. Good stuff tho. If it were imperialized it might be banned as a chemical weapon.
