In 2006, Chris Carroll, a longtime member of Team Stone, took that adage literally, proposing that we produce a one-off version of our venerable Stone Smoked Porter made spicy from the addition of chipotle peppers. We gave it a shot and found that those smoked jalapeños melded quite naturally with the smoldery peat-smoked malt that gives the beer its flavor and moniker, creating a deep, roasty quaff with a carefully restrained tingle of tasteful capsaicin heat in the finish. The marriage of ingredients was so nice that it has become an annual summertime staple, released each May in honor of Carroll’s initial idea that Stone Smoked Porter w/Chipotle Peppers serve as an artisanal alternative to the industrialized adjunct-laden cerveza billed as the perfect fluid accompaniment to the sunny season. Cheers to variety and a quality alternative to mediocrity.
We first started making casks of this beer in 2006 for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Since then, the beer has been both a fan and Team Stone favorite. We’ve brewed many small batches of it throughout the years and are always happy to make more!

New Beer Distributors, NY 12oz ($3.75): Pours pretty near black with a tan head. Aroma is slight smoke, roast malts, and, perhaps, a hint of peppers. Taste is nice and sharp. The chipotle peppers add a nice undertone, along with a bit of fire throughout. The chocolate flavors are really nice. ’Tis easy to drink and brings a bunch of flavor. Body is not as light as some of the reviews suggest.

Bottle - I figured this would be a good beer to welcome the first sign of a light evening chill I the air - cola-like pour - fizzy head - nose is fairly smoky, with a string earthiness resembling soil - some cocoa - no chilis present in the nose - body is thin - texture is a little rough - fairly sweet throughout - some light notes of chocolate and roast - moderate pepper heat that builds a bit with each sip - smoke comes back strong in the finish - not a lot going on, really - just sweetness, spice and smoke - was hoping for more.

It has been a long time since I had a Stone Smoked Porter (that wasn;t barrel aged) maybe 6 years. So this will be fun to revisit with these two different treatments. The 12oz bottle pours mahogany with deep ruby red edges and tan head of foam. The aroma offers up sort of dark roasted malts and a little bit of chili pepper meat followed by some sweet maltiness. The taste is more bold than the vanilla version. I get dark roasted to burnt malts with a modest level of chili pepper flavor and very light chili heat to midway. Into the finish the smooth modest smokiness joins in and takes this to the after taste. Somehow the chili pepper addition has amplified the roastiness in this brew or it was the vanilla in the other one that sort of covered it up. Cool stuff, this.

Bottle: Dark brown with auburn hues. Roasty nose with light smoke. The smokiness is toned down from the original, not really picking up on the chipotle. Less ash and more roast, some cocoa, but no peppers. Good, but I was expecting more.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Sparrow-Downtown, 8/30/12
Aroma: The aroma has lots of smoked malts/meat, burnt malts, and some peppery notes
Appearance: Pours a deep, dark drown color with a smooth froth of light brown head and heavy lace
Flavor: The flavor of the one, like the nose, is also heavy malty, with lots of roasted/burnt flavors, some medium-plus smoke, and, while not a ton of pepper, there is a little more pepper in the taste then the nose
Palate: It is medium bodied, has a somewhat creamy feel, soft carbonation, and a dry, roasty finish
Overall Impression: This one feels like a combination of a Porter and a Rauchbier with a light pepper presence thrown in. Overall, that style combination works pretty well here. Though the peppers are subtle, they still add a nice component to the beer.

Smoke and tree bark nose, savory, campfire. Clear cola pour, thick tan head, some lacing. Smoke flavor, with soot in the end. Thinnish mouthfeel. A slight sweetness that doesn’t belong at all. Really no chipotles to be found. I have some issues with this one. It’s certainly not at the level of quality I expect from Stone. Didn’t deliver on the peppers, has no body, and is a tad too sweet.

12 oz. bottle, pours a very dark brown / black with a reddish tinge and a small beige head. Aroma of mild roast, subtle chipotle peppers (not very prominent on the nose) and some vanilla-like notes. Flavour of muffled chipotle peppers, over top mild roast, and not much else. The peppers become more and more pronounced and monolithic with each sip. Not a fan of this edition.

12 ounce bottle thanks to Dallas. Pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head. The aroma is roast and chocolates. The flavor has spicy hot peppers, but not overly hot, some earthy dry cocoa and light roast fits in. Pretty mellow but lots of flavor. Good.
