Number one in a series of five stouts produced to help ease you through the cold and grey midwestern winters. This beer is full bodied with hints of chocolate, roasted barley, coffee flavors and a nice creamy head.

Coffee, smoke, and dark toast on the nose. Black, thin beige head. Full body. Coffee with blueberry accents, alkaline and neither sweet nor dry. Finishes with an aspirin-like bitterness that is rather off-putting. Intriguing.

Poured from a bottle it is a dark brown Colorado withoutva head. The aroma is coffee and the taste is mocha with a strong roasted coffee flavor that resonates on the palate

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/18/2012. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, light char, oats, toast, toffee, dark bread, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt notes; with great strength. Taste of dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, light char, oats, toast, toffee, dark bread, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, light char, oats, toast, toffee, dark bread, and light vanilla on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt flavors; with great robustness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy, moderately slick, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent oatmeal stout! All around great complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle thanks to JStax. Pours black with medium light brown head which dissapates fairly quickly. Thin small bubble lacing, medium/thick body, medium carbonation, and nice roasty aroma. Taste is roasted malt, some tartness, some coffee, and finishes burnt malt. A little heavy, not a big fan of the finish, but still pretty good.

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz ($2ish): Pours a deep black with a brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, burnt oats and other grains, some sugar, and a little hit of dark coffee. Taste is pretty much as expected. If this is a sweet stout then the taste is really not that sweet at all. The bitterness is the controlling taste in this. Body is nice and creamy. Not too much carbonation. Easy to drink, even though it is a pretty heavy beer. ’Tis well done, yeah.

Got 12 oz. bottle in a trade with Queenholly. This was room temperature when It was poured. Almost no aroma at all except for a light lactose sugar. Flavor is chocolate, licorice and some citrus hop to help with balance. Unfortunately for me this beer wasn’t balanced in my taste. Lots of bitterness. Very low carbonation, so low in fact it had a flat texture. Or maybe this didn’t stand a chance since I had Bells Java stout right before it. I don’t mean to say this is a bad brew in any sense. It just didn’t live up to the two Bell’s offerings I had right before it. A nice thing is the ABV is hidden nicely. So overall, it still really is worth a try.

35,5 cl bottle @ Olutkellari Helsinki (RIP) , Rated on 06.04.2010
Aroma has somewhat salty licorice, some coffee notes, hints of dark chocolate and soy sauce. Flavour is ashy with salty licorice, fruits, some dark chocolate, cocoa and distant herbal notes. Smooth but somewhat ashy finish. Like a mixture of foreign and sweet stout.
