The Export India Porter relates to porter in similar manner to the way the IPA relates to the Pale Ale: they added more hops. We’ve taken Barclay Perkins recipe from 1855, but changed the hops to Columbus and Cascade (American varieties) and hopped it in the same way that we hop our IPAs. The result is a dark brown beer that smells of cocoa, roses, and some orange. The body is quite light, and it is carbonated more highly than usual for a porter to make it more refreshing. It’s quite light in texture and tastes of Turkish delight dusted with cocoa powder – chocolate, rose water and fruit. Dry finish.

Bottle at the April DC Ratebeer tasting. Poured a nearly pitch black color with a very tan head. Rich, but not overly cloying. Chocolate. Big, robust. Really good.

Bottle at home on 15th March 2023. Solid sepia black with tan foam and scant lacing. Coffee and nutty dark chocolate aroma. Spiced roasty malts in-mouth with hints of smoke. A finish of roastiness, woodsmoke and coffee. Full bodied with an engaging texture. Superb.

330 ml bottle. Murky darkest brown with a stable creamy head. Licorice, dark chocolate, ashes, robusta coffee, hoppy notes, leather, rubber, burnt malt and burnt pizza dough. Roasty hoppy bitterness, some sweetness. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonated, hoppy roasty bittersweet finish. Lovely as expected, very complex and super drinkable!
