The Export India Porter relates to porter in similar manner to the way the IPA relates to the Pale Ale: they added more hops. We’ve taken Barclay Perkins recipe from 1855, but changed the hops to Columbus and Cascade (American varieties) and hopped it in the same way that we hop our IPAs. The result is a dark brown beer that smells of cocoa, roses, and some orange. The body is quite light, and it is carbonated more highly than usual for a porter to make it more refreshing. It’s quite light in texture and tastes of Turkish delight dusted with cocoa powder – chocolate, rose water and fruit. Dry finish.

Draft at the International Beer Bar, Zurich. Pours dark brown with a foamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, citrus notes. Taste is very roasty, nuts, dark chocolate, citrus notes, pine. Quite good.

Caña en 1420 15..11..2017. (r514). Color negro intenso con espuma beige oscuro. Sabores maltosos tostados con toques de cafés y suave achicoria torrefacta. Cuerpo medio algo seco y con suave amargo seco final. Bastante buena para repetir.

500 ml bottle. Pours black with moderate head. Aromas of weedy pine, sweet dark fruit and slick roasted malts. Flavors of pine, black coffee, and sweet roasted malts. Piney finish.

Flavour is burned malts and coffee, as well as dark bread, leather, cocoa and wood. Bone dry finish. Quaffable and moreish. Superb!

F: medium size, tanned, good retention. C: totally dark. A: roasted malt, chocolate, plums, cocoa, citrus, bit pine. T: roasted malt, chocolate, tangerine, bit grapefruits, pine, earthy, good harmonic bitterness, medium to full body, soft carbonation, very good balanced citrus fruitiness with cocoa tones, fresh must be even better, enjoyed, BB: 30/03/17, 6% ABV, (Simcoe Sticklebract), 33cl bottle from Malt Attacks in Brussels.

Sampled from tap at ’Craftbeer Corner Coeln’. Pitch black with an off-white head. Sweetish-malty, moderately roasty and slightly resiny aroma of dark chocolate, coffee and some pine. Slightly sweetish, malty, rather roasty and slightly resiny taste of dark chocolate, lots of coffee, some licorice and hints of pine, followed by a medium long, rather dry-bitter and slightly resiny finish. Medium to full body, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very nice, although less hoppy than the name suggests.

Pours dark brown from the bottle and leaves a brown, frothy head. Aroma goes at first into chocolate, then the hops come through and remind very much of an IPA — pine and grapefruit being evident. Taste is bittersweet but with the bitter component gaining the upper hand. Medium bodied, very dry, with a feel in the mouth of wet cotton. Makes you thirsty. Overall though, not bad. Certainly not a traditional porter, and feels throughout much more like a black IPA.
