December 2009 saw the birth of our Winterkoninske Grand Cru, a strong dark beer to enjoy with moderation. The use of different dark malts results in tones of chocolate, coffee and sherry. This makes it a perfect match for game dishes and chocolate desserts. The strongest winter beer of Limburg.

Hazy dark brown colour. Aroma of sweet dried fruits. Texture is really rich, oily and a bit sticky. Flavour has sweet dates and other dried fruit. There’s also a little caramel. In the finish there’s some biiter roast malt giving some hints of cocoa/chocolate.

Bottle at t’Brugs Beertje, Brugge - 01/12/12. Split with Nutty. Black with a frothy tan head. Nose is roast malt, molasses, nuts, chocolate, burnt treacle toffee, touch wood. Tastes of dark roast malts, dark fruits, touch of chocolate, toffee, cloves, dark sweet sugars, molasses. Full bodied, cloying, smooth, full on sugary sweet finish. Decent enough stuff but a 750ml bottle defeated two of us - way too sweet ! Suggest a 4 way split would be more appropriate unless you have a really sweet tooth.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm) Black colour with lasting, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with caramel, dried fruit, dark treacle, raisins and a touch of alcohol. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, dried fruit, chocolate, liquorice, anise and a sweet finish with a warming touch of alcohol. Full body, smooth mouthfeel. Fairly sweet. It’s a bit over the top and fairly powerful, but on the other hand quite tasty and irresistible. Very nice beer!

Bottled@Chriso "Donkey Dork Lord" shindig 2011. Dark murky brown colour with a mediumsized beige head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is sweet malts, mild alcohol, some toasted notes as well as mild yeastyness. Flavour is rather similar, but the alcohol burns rather much.

0.75l bottle shared with BelgBeerGeek @ Kulminator. This one is a hard to see through- amlost impossible actually and it's colored near black with a medium sized and lacing beige head. The aroma has sweetness, chocolate paper, dark malts, syrup and fruity blackberries. All in all quite a complex and really nice aroma. Hard for me to tell what genre this beer is classified as but it's definitely really really tasty! Packed with sweetness without being sweet, dark, hazelnutty and malty, boozy dipped biscuits with sugar on top and raisins on the side. This was an extreme tasty brew. Thanks for the tip Vincent! 02.06.2012

2016-02-22, synthetic cork, courtesy of fonefan, as Sarphati Oude Olie Grand Cru, probably 5 years old, 8-3-8-4-16=39
Dark brown color, no head. The aroma shows signs of oxidation, but also rich dark caramel and chocolate. Strong, sweet, nice caramel flavor, with notes of tobacco and vanilla.
Old, but the strong alcohol helped to keep this one on top of the wave. Very enjoyable.

2012-04-01, synthetic cork; bottle from Beer Planet, Brussels
Dark brown color; small head. Aroma of malt, dark caramel, Belgian yeast, dark fruits; sweet. Full bodied, with round mouthfeel; rich malt and caramel flavor, with some dark chocolate; mild fruit presence; quite sweet; there is some alcohol presence, and regular bitterness.
One fo the few rich Belgian beers still around.
