All New Englanders have a special place in their hearts for the old, dilapidated covered bridge of their youth. Maybe you rumbled over one every day riding shotgun in the family’s rusted-out pickup truck, or maybe one stands out from some rustic vacation largely long-since forgotten. No matter the case, they remain a symbol of nostalgia and youthful exuberance, a figurative bridge to another time.
For the traditionalist, the sentimental at heart, we offer Robust Porter, our take on a style of beer that, like these bridges, has remained impervious to trends, stalwart in the face of change. One gulp and you’ll be teleported to a simpler time. To that, all we can say is, Cheers

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a dark brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is light creamy sweet malt. The flavour is moderate sweet with a liqourice malt, coffee, burnt toffee palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

355 ml. bottle sampled. Bottled on date is hard to read but looks like this one was bottled in 2013. Pours a very dark furniture brown, little to almost no mocha head. Nose is big on soy sauce, varnish, thinned out, ashes, herbal & more umami + soy sauce notes that I am not too crazy about. Taste is thin herbal, soy sauce, umami, leaves, thin & powdery with old herbs, feels thinned out, touch oxidized, more ashes, some port wine, leaves & licorice. Body much like taste is thinned out, ashy, powdery, faintly vinous almost (body & taste). Not too crazy about this one, age might play a part here but I feel like it just isn’t really for me. Having this one in a better state would have been nicer.

Tap at Beergeek Bar. Strong rich full malty beer, very nicely balanced, very smooth, making love to my tongue. Cocoa, chocolate and roasted flavours. Oh yeah, very good.

355 ml bottle bought at Grebhan´s, Bremen. Pours out black and oily. Nearly no head. Choco and leather on the nose. Strong start with toffee, malt and hop in the second row. Some bitterness. Hints of citrus. Long aftertaste. Really nice one.

From the very old notes, hence this is not a real rating, but more just a mark to myself that I have tried this at one point. Nice hoppy porter with chocolate and coffee notes.

Pours a deep dark brown from a bottle with a khaki head. Aroma of coffee, a little chocolate, flavor similar with some burnt notes. Good beer.

Bottle from Signal Variety, Plaistow NH. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate nibs and hint of coffee. Appearance is opaque black with minimal light brown head, with fair foamy lacing. Taste is balanced moderately sweet chocolatey flavor with moderately bitter coffee flavor. Palate is medium bodied with medium, slightly slick texture, soft carbonation and nice, long finish like chocolate covered espresso beans. Overall, really nice all around. Nitpicking, head could be larger, texture a little thicker, but those things only separate it from where it is--very, very, good, with the only place left to go--world class.
