Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine with Vanilla, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Maple Syrup
This is our classic bourbon barrel-aged barleywine ale, Mash, joining forces with even stickier, malt-forward forces from our barrel warehouse to create the gooey-sweet profile you’d expect from a french toast-like creation from The Bruery. If the allure of rich, caramelized notes or maple character don’t rouse you out of bed, the wafts from our brewer’s kitchen will, summoning you with nutmeg and cinnamon spices and warm vanilla character. It’s time to roll up your sleeves and Mash & French Toast. No utensils required.

Probably one of the ones that did me in! No damn man kills me and lives. Bottle thanks to Chris. Pours a dark brown reddish color with a small white head. Huge vanilla, caramel, toffee and berry nose. Spicy, syrup, rich sugary heat, some banana. Very big, works well. Just a bit much.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 12/14/2016. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy dark ruby red/light brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of huge cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes raisin, fig, plum, date, apricot, coconut, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, maple/spices, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes raisin, fig, plum, date, apricot, coconut, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/cinnamon bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, light dark fruit/coconut, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, maple/spices, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly drying from bitter/spiciness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and lightly silky/sticky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is extremely well hidden; a mild warmth with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an insane spiced English barelywine! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, maple/spices, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Perfectly balanced between malt, spice, and barrel flavors. Tastes exactly like french toast as advertised. The spices mask a lot of the fruity yeast character of the base beer, but there is still a solid amount there. An insanely delicious offering, and probably my favorite of the Mash series so far; but the regular and vanilla were pretty much equally exceptional in different ways.

Sample during Blarney Wine Festival 2017 on 03/18/2017. The beer is a dark mahogany-brown color with a medium foamy beige head that diminishes gradually to a wispy film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, cinnamon, maple and oak. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, cinnamon, maple and oaky bourbon. The finish is sweet with a bourbon-infused maple syrup aftertaste. Good beer all around.
