This is the second of the “aged beers” produced by the brewery. It is a jet black beer, with strong aromas of expresso coffee with flavours of creamy malt, coffee, chocolate, herbal hops and a bittersweet finish with a hint of liquorice. It is dedicated to the memory of the breweries that once produced this style of beer in vast quantities for export to the Baltic States via the North Sea.

275ml bottle [2010 vintage, #1439/1600]. Jet black colour with small, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Roasty, chocolately, malty spicy aroma, notes of dark chocolate, couverture, liquorice, a touch of marmite, roasted nuts, dark caramel, ashy overtones. Taste is roasty, chocolately, dark malty, notes of dark chocolate, Belgian chocolate, some couverture, liquorice, a sweet-ish touch of treacle, caramel, roasted nuts, a minimally ashy touch, bitter hoppy counterpart. Oily to viscous texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, soft carbonation. In these flourishing flavoured times a nice reminder of what a classic if not historic Imperial Stout can be. Pretty good.

Bottle at the Croydonia Tasting - East Croydon. This one I picked up at the Kris Wines some time ago. Pours clear, brown-black with a fine, tan cream head. Nose of dried dark fruits, chocolate, well-roasted malts and ash. Medium to big sweet flavor with sugary, dry bread, raisins, chocolate cake, dark fruits. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish with deep and dark malts, chocolate, burnt marshmallows, prunes and other dark, dried and ripened fruits. Solid.
