Smaakbeschrijving

Tap at Jopenkerk. Dark ruby colour, small beige head. Wood, toasted, smoke in the nose. Medium-bodied to full-bodied. Smoke, toasted malts, wood in the flavour. A bit sweet finish. Simple but nice strong beer.

330mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out bright smoke upfront, with medium roast, and a bit of peat. Flavour is along the same lines, with moderate smoke, medium roasted malt, and a touch of dry cocoa. Very nice smokiness to this, adding another level of complexity. Very good.

Bottle, Legacy. Dark brown, not much head. There's some plasticy phenols coming through on the aroma, alongside some apple, light smokiness, and maybe a hint of molasses. On the palate, this sort of fruity acidity lends balance to a body long on char and molassesy residual sugars. It's not bad but that appley note carries through the palate as well as the nose, and it's kind of messing it up for me. Wondering if this needs to work with a different yeast to minimize that component.

Black colour, small head. Mild aroma, roasted malt, light cheese. Full bodied, good dark malt flavour, moderately sweet, touch of liquorice and smoke, relatively low bitterness.
Very good.

Jopen’s smoked imperial stout, bottle from a Mitra shop somewhere in the northern Netherlands. Creamily textured, medium sized, pale brownish tan, regular head, more or less stable over a blackish beer yet with translucently burgundy coloured, hazy edges for about half an inch off the edge so not as dark as many other modern imperial stouts. Strong bouquet of chocolate liqueur and caramel candy, quite strong glue- and shoe polish-like solvents, whisky, hazelnut paste, pipe tobacco and expensive cigars – yet close to no smoked bacon effects I expect from anything “smoked” and remaining almost equally subtle in 'peatiness', butterscotch, stewed pear, cinnamon, leather, mocha ice cream, vague soapy aspects. Dried fig, apricot and raisin sweetness in the onset with a light sourish edge; softish carbo, thick, full and oily mouthfeel the way it should be. Thick creamy caramelly malt body, toffeeish and chocolatey in the middle with softly bittering toasty edges but remaining low in coffee-like roasted bitterness; retronasally a whiff of sweet pipe tobacco again, but no real smokiness from smoked malts. Ends with a lot of residual sweetness (like so many imperial stouts these days) but this is balanced with a soft toasted bitterness, a late but effective peppery hop bitterness clearly detectable on the root of the tongue, and the expected strong afterglow of warming whisky-like alcohol, yet not as astringent and overly boozy as feared. Bit too solventy, but otherwise a highly enjoyable offering, one of Jopen’s more remarkable achievements of recent years; however, it does not deliver what it promises in almost completely lacking smoked malt properties (which I was kind of looking forward to) – so in all fairness, this is a point off. Could have made 4/5 for me otherwise.

Botella 33 cl en Queen beer Valladolid 12..12..2017. (r38). Buena. Para repetir.

Thanks! 330 ml. bottle sampled. Black syrup, smaller mocha head. Nose is extremely black liquorice thick gravy smoke, burned sweet plastic. Weird mix of extremely sweet smoked soy sauce, grape, dark fruit, bitter charcoal, extremely black liquorice, sweet liquid smoke, massive but thick black liquorice sweet smoked gravy is not really my thing.
