Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.
De goudblonde Extra wordt slechts tweemaal per jaar gebrouwen en is alleen bedoeld voor intern gebruik. Dit bier drinken de monniken en hun gasten immers enkel bij het middagmaal. Typisch voor de Extra is dat hij alleen met water, gerstemout en hopbellen wordt gebrouwen. Hij deelt zijn gist met de Dubbel en Tripel en is dus ook een bier van hoge gisting, al bevat hij maar 4,8% alcohol. Het aroma is typisch Westmalle en het hoppige karakter zorgt voor een dorstlessende droge afdronk.

Levendig lichtgeel bier met mooie stevioge schuimkraag. Smaak is licht bitter hoppig en licht fruitig met een combinatie van banaan, citrus en ananas. Heel goed bier.

Ich habe dieses Bier im größten Craftbeer-Shop Österreichs gefunden und nicht gedacht, dass es so speziell ist, da die anderen Biere der Westmalle-Brauerei recht leicht verfügbar sind. Es hat ein hellblaues Etikett und ust mit 4 % alc recht leicht. Das wirkt sich auch im Geschmack aus. So ist es zwar sehr angenehm leicht zu trinken, hat aber keine besonders ausgeprägten Aromen. Es ist so leicht, das man außer einem Bisquit-Aroma und ein bisschen Malz und Hopfen im Abgang nicht viel hat. Das ist aber schön harmonisch. Vielleicht ist die Leichte des Biers gewollt, dann hat man es toll erreicht, mir könnte es ruhig etwas voller sein.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Hazy golden with a large white head. Yeast, apples, grass, citrus and hints of spices. The finish on the dry side.

Bottle. Clear golden body under a huge, foamy white head. Quite strong in aroma, pale malt, bread, Belgium yeast, some citric fruit, cane sugar and a herbal touch. Aroma is distinct golden Belgium Trappist beer, like a light version of a triple. Taste gives the same impression, basically a rather plain, sweet golden ale, but something, not easy to but a name on, just some kind of distinct Belgium way to make a plain, sweet, golden ale a bit more interesting and actually less sweet than in probably is. Pure, pale malt, dough/bread, citric fruit, white sugar, spices, herbs and hint of honey. Body feels nice for a 4,8 % ABV and some bitterness is following into the aftertaste as well. Not super complex, but rather enjoyable as it is.
