Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.

Bottle from Mathias, Belgian delivery. Almost no aroma. Nice lager like gold with lasting foam. It is really inoffensive and maintain some Belgian body to it despite low abv. Freshly cut thick grass on the taste. But forgetful sadly and I did expect a lot better based on my appeciation of both Westvleteren and Chimay's low abvs. (29/12/21) --- Bottle. Not sure where from. Nice and fruity and easy drinking. Liked a lot. 2.9 to 3.2. (30/4/23) ----- Bottle. Same. 3.2 to 3.3.

Pours slightly darker than golden, with a bit of haziness (more hazy on second pour). A quite big and very dense white head shows good retention and nice lacing. Good enough intensity in the aroma: a slight cereal/crackery base, fruity notes (citrus and peach), delicate grassy freshness, slight hint of spiciness. Taste notes follow the aroma, again with nice intensity, but with not too much definition: flavours are kind of drowned by a half sirupy/half sugary sweet feel. Taste balance: medium to high sweetness, light to medium bitterness; a sweet edge in both taste and aftertaste. Light bodied with quite high carbonation; a lively easily drinkable beer. An okay sessionable belgian ale, though a bit too sweet for my ideal liking. I was probably expecting something more.

Bottle at Ebenezer’s, Nantwich. Pours a cloudy pale yellow with a small white head. A fair amount of yeastiness in the aroma, plus hints of lime. Fairly high carboantion gives it some sparkle. In the mouth, it is like chewy lemon-lime sweets with added honey and ginger. Finish is slightly spicy. Rather nice.

330ml bottle shares with martinsh at Ebeneezer's Craft Beer Emporium, Nantwich. Light to mid-gold, slightly hazy with a sizeable ring of white head. Woody, yeasty notes in the aroma with some light soft citrus underneath. Sweet honey and candy sugar yeast flavours with a dogged bitterness appearing near the end of the sip. A light vegetal note in the finish. Heavy carbonation. Masterful for the style.
