Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.
De goudblonde Extra wordt slechts tweemaal per jaar gebrouwen en is alleen bedoeld voor intern gebruik. Dit bier drinken de monniken en hun gasten immers enkel bij het middagmaal. Typisch voor de Extra is dat hij alleen met water, gerstemout en hopbellen wordt gebrouwen. Hij deelt zijn gist met de Dubbel en Tripel en is dus ook een bier van hoge gisting, al bevat hij maar 4,8% alcohol. Het aroma is typisch Westmalle en het hoppige karakter zorgt voor een dorstlessende droge afdronk.

Bottle from Spar, Ostend. Clear golden, big, frothy, white head. Aroma of apple peel, Conférence pear, unripe banana, wheat, bread crust, baker's yeast, pepper. Taste has sweetish apple, pear & unripe banana, soft estery profile, quite bready-yeasty with wheaty-soapy freshness and spicy notes. Grassy hoppy in the finish, bit phenolic, yeasty, more unripe yellow fruits. Medium body, moussy texture, fizzy carbonation. Nicely drinkable little brother of Westmalle Tripel. (Edited 6/03/2025.)

Bière cl trouvée au garage à bières à Herlies. Robe jaune claire légèrement translucide et mousse peu tenace. Nez doux sur la levure belge. Bouche qui a du caractère et un peu d'amertume, donne l'impression d'être plus forte que ses 4°8. Très sympa. (M)

Bottle at home. Slight hazy pale golden with fluffy white head. Dry grains, quite flowery, even some rose, light spicy yeast, berry jam, marmelade. Medium sweet and bitter. Under medium bodied with crisp dry finish and a lot of creamy carbonation. Better than I expected, lovely stuff.

33 cl bottle bought from Be Hoppy Madrid. It pours hazy lemon yellow with an egg-white, foamy head that grows big but lingers little time. Aroma is well balanced between malty (white bread, porridge) and hoppy (mint, coriander, lemon peel). Fizzy and dry start, leading to a medium-bodied and crisp mouthfeel that yields to a long-lasting, bitter finish. Very good for a patersbier.

Arôme au nez clairement sur des effluves belges, le nez reste orienté sur des grains concassés avec un léger parfum de houblons nobles et une pointe de levure. Je note un léger fruité et fleuri qui offre un parfum frais quasi printanier de jasmin et de haies en fleurs. Le tout est ponctué de suite par un résiduel céréales.
Palais est de suite marqué par son palais sec et crisp rafraîchissant. Rondeur de grains en fin de bouche, léger apport fleuri et une petite note de douceur grains-fruité d'esters avec une petite note finement poivrée.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours clear straw-gold with a thick white head. Aromas of light banana, yeast esters and light bread. Taste is estery, white sugar, hint of almond. Thin finish.
