Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.

Bottle. Wine Rack, Sheffield. Honey gold. Faint haze. Loads of fine fast rising bubbles form a thick, sturdy, white head. Nose has honeyed grain. Ripe banana. Hop spice. Wheat. Taste has a little sweetness, with a firm, leafy and peppery bitterness. Dries a little on the palate. Medium body with high, foamy carbonation. Robustly bitter finish. No wonder they keep this one for themselves.

Bottle. Very excited to finally have the opportunity to try this. Nose is citrus, gentle lime, minerality, cloves, yeast, lemon juice. Taste is lime, lemon, malty body, hint of banana and clove, floral and perfumed, leading to more lime, touch of minerality and orange, finish is dry and spicey. Great lighter beer with complexity and depth; lucky monks who can enjoy this with dinner.

A treat, bright banana esters up front, effervescent, punchy. Perry-like in the mouth and a lovely yeastiness
