Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.
De goudblonde Extra wordt slechts tweemaal per jaar gebrouwen en is alleen bedoeld voor intern gebruik. Dit bier drinken de monniken en hun gasten immers enkel bij het middagmaal. Typisch voor de Extra is dat hij alleen met water, gerstemout en hopbellen wordt gebrouwen. Hij deelt zijn gist met de Dubbel en Tripel en is dus ook een bier van hoge gisting, al bevat hij maar 4,8% alcohol. Het aroma is typisch Westmalle en het hoppige karakter zorgt voor een dorstlessende droge afdronk.

Bottle at Antwaerps Bierhuiske. Pale blond colour, small white head. Aroma is floury, grain, bit of hop, yeasty. Taste is nice, quite thin, but good. Lemon, grainy. Nice and drinkable, I prefer this to the tripel.

2nd LCRBM. Very fresh sample. Fresh citrus in the aroma. Citrus flavor, especially grapefruit. Some light grassy hops. Very well made light beer, one of the great beers of this meeting.

33 cl. bottle @ Menno, shared bij Wim-Jaap. hazy light golden with a white head. Malty yeasty aroma with some white pepper. Medium bitter taste. Tastes like a session version of the Westmalle tripel, which is a good thing.

Bottle at In De Wildeman in Amsterdam. Golden almost clear and bright, medium to low white foam. Nose: esters, hidden spices, some cookies. Mouth: frizzy carbonation, some citric and grapefruit overall.

Bottle. Yellow/Orange color, with a big creamy head, slowly collapsing. Aroma is malty, bread, fruity, hoppy. Taste is bready, again hoppy, also something a bit sour. Quite bitter, with dry finish. Very long nice bitter aftertaste. This beer has great flavor to be only a 4,8% beer. Really a nice surprise. I wish it would be easier to find.
