Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.
De goudblonde Extra wordt slechts tweemaal per jaar gebrouwen en is alleen bedoeld voor intern gebruik. Dit bier drinken de monniken en hun gasten immers enkel bij het middagmaal. Typisch voor de Extra is dat hij alleen met water, gerstemout en hopbellen wordt gebrouwen. Hij deelt zijn gist met de Dubbel en Tripel en is dus ook een bier van hoge gisting, al bevat hij maar 4,8% alcohol. Het aroma is typisch Westmalle en het hoppige karakter zorgt voor een dorstlessende droge afdronk.

Bottle. Color: Slightly hazy rather pale yellow, white head. Aroma: Malt, hop, yeast. Taste: Nicely balanced flavours of pale malt, grain, hop and yeast. Moderate sweet and hopbitter. Light hints of white sugar and herbal hints. Somewhat more bitterness at the finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Average carbonation, medium body. Hopbitter Saison-ish yeasty finish. Very easy drinkable, yet with a subtle complexity. Enjoyable.

33cl bottle pours a crystal clear gold with plenty of sticky, white head. Nose had candy, honey, grass, dried orange peel. Flavor is the same, orange peel and potpourri, light soap, grist, yeast. Finishes lightly astringent.

4.8% alk. Belgijski ale, lagana piva, osjeti se nešto pšeničnog slada i kvasca. Slatkasta i dosta ugodna piva. Ove westmalle pive su stvarno nešto posebno i vrijedno za probati.

0.33l bottle. Slightly hazy golden body with a white head. Spicy hops and bready malts provide its character. Surprisingly some smoke appears too so as a bit of honey. OK session beer (funny to call a Trappist ale a session beer though).

330ml bottle. Barely clear, yellow-ish golden colour with huge, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Floral, yeasty fruity, minimally bready and strawy, malty aroma, notes of (dried) apricot and peach, hints of banana, a touch of pollen and honey. Taste is dry, dusty yeasty spicy, slightly floral minimally fruity, minimally bready and strawy background with subtle sweetness, diluted notes of apricot, mirabelle and peach. Light, minimally watery, highly drinkable.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een troebel licht geel bier met een medium witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een volle moutige smaak.
