Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.
De goudblonde Extra wordt slechts tweemaal per jaar gebrouwen en is alleen bedoeld voor intern gebruik. Dit bier drinken de monniken en hun gasten immers enkel bij het middagmaal. Typisch voor de Extra is dat hij alleen met water, gerstemout en hopbellen wordt gebrouwen. Hij deelt zijn gist met de Dubbel en Tripel en is dus ook een bier van hoge gisting, al bevat hij maar 4,8% alcohol. Het aroma is typisch Westmalle en het hoppige karakter zorgt voor een dorstlessende droge afdronk.

Pour is a cloudy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a creamy lager malt with a nice fruity yeast ester. Flavor is about the same. A rich creamy dry almost lager malt with some fruit ester and very herbal hop notes. Pretty good low abv Belgian.

Bottle. Hazy yellow with a big white head, dissipates fairly quick. Nose and taste of hay, herbs, bread and fruit, medium bitterness, sharp bubbles. Very well balanced, like a tiny Tripel of theirs.

Pleasantly surprised to find a bottle at the Lcbo. Pours a cloudy blonde, considerable fluffy white head. Light esters, a touch of tangerine, heavy hay malt, bitterness on the finish. Nice.

Gyllengul och disig med ett tätt skum. Torr, kryddig doft med inslag av belgisk jäst och grönsaker. Ganska lätt kropp med stickig kolsyra. Torr, kryddig smak med inslag av gråpäron.

Glad I found this online. Westmalle Trappist Extra 4.8% The aroma was very wine like on opening the bottle. In the glass the golden brew with dense fine white bubbles. The aroma is sweet honey with a bit of tart fruits as well as wheat cakes. The medium bodied but very dry brew has good malt character with dusty wheat cake flavor while the aftertaste gives white grape, hints of honeyed stone fruits and a bit of herbal hop bitterness, me be even hints of vanilla. Nice to have a lighter abv Trappist.

Bottle ordered from Brew Cavern, Nottingham. Aroma has grains, yeast and dry sherbert. Honey. Clear gold. Bubbly body. Lively foamy white head. Light-medium bitter. Sour edge. Malty finish. Chewy. Light bodied. Relatively thin but benefits from soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Good stuff.
