Flavor is malts, coffee, dark chocolate/chocolate cake, raisins, oak, bourbon, woodnotes, some booze. Full body, oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation, warming alcoholic finish. Very nice brew. 120712

Sample at the Central OH BA Tasting at From The Vine on 06/02/2012: Pours an inky black color with a medium thin tan head that recedes steadily to a dense film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of charred malt, dark chocolate and bourbon. Rich and smooth body with a nicely balanced bourbon character with notes of dark malt, chocolate, vanilla and hops. The finish is somewhat boozy with a lingering oaky aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Bottle from Beverages 4 Less. Fred’s the man! Pours very dark brown with a transient dark tan head. Aroma of bourbon/vanilla/oak with something unfamiliar. Full bodied +. Flavor is brown sugar, bourbon, oak and very smooth burnt malt. think chocolate also. Complex and tasty. Finishes on the sweet side, but it’s very bourbon/chocolate. Very flavorful.

12 oz bottle from Arminjewell. Nose is lightly charred smoky oak, chocolate, vanilla, and molasses in the background. Black with a medium, quick disappearing cinnamon tan head. Flavor is vanilla, sweet raisins, white pepperiness, light bitterness, and a bit of bourbon. Finish is a bit of bitter and bourbony alcohol warmth. Excellent BBA Stout! Hard to believe it’s actually 17.42%, the alcohol warmth tastes like a 10%er. 2017 version only 14.9% ABV. Still very good but not as good as last year

Bottle. (bottled March 27, 2012). Pours with a sickly thick, inky black body that is completely opaque. Massive tan head resides atop. Great retention (very impressive for a beer of this size), glass coating with incredible lace. Aromas are huge and awesome. Big fudge character, bourbon, barrel, boozy (but not sharp/solvent/distinctly fusel), nougat (big time), nutty, whiskey, barrel, toffee, fresh baked goods, caramel, almond extract, chocolate everywhere (really strong fudge which I wrote down about 5 times for the aroma alone). Medium peppery alcohol, rich, decadent, marshmallow. Flavors are very, very rich, viscous, decadent, medium tannin, barrel, mocha, fudge, light alcohol burn. INTENSE. Caramel, toffee, very long duration of flavors, figs, dark fruits, chestnuts, nougat, stewed prunes. Sweet but never cloying, boozy but not harsh. Very complex. Tobacco and earthy truffle on the finish. Like a baby Black Tuesday in a smaller and cheaper bottle. Less dark fruit character than Black Tuesday. Burnt caramel, port wine, bitter, raisin, currant. Endlessly complex, big. Full bodied, velvety mouthfeel, and completely mouth coating. Warming, low carbonation. Caramelized and candied. Epic!
