Observers of yestercentury once doubted the existence of the Dark Swan, stating the fair-feathered fowl was the only color of its kind. Explorers eventually upended that theory, shocking the world and shining light on the Dark. This beer might just do the same. It’s a sour ale fermented with dark red wine grapes, giving it its uniquely deep and rich purple hue. Then it received the signature Lagunitas treatment with a healthy dose of experimental dry hops. This might just shock your taste buds!

Pour is a dark red-brown with a purple head. Aroma is quite hoppy for a sour ale and then there is the lactic sour notes as well. Flavor is a lot of red wine aspects with some chocolate covered sour cherry hiding in the back round. There is also a underlying hop presence. More wine like than beer but this was still a pleasant offering and one is probably is all I will ever need.

Draft at the Handlebar. Pours out like grape juice, but with more bubbles. Even the smell favors the grapes, without the win-y-ness. Taste is fruity and only minor tartness. Pretty light weight despite the ABV.

Pours deep purple into a snifter. Ruby head with good retention recedes to nothing. Dark, red grape aromas. Soft with sweet and sour red wine from front to back. Lasting mild earth and grape skin finish. Similar to a dry lambrusco.

Mmkay, lets hope it better than it looks. 12 ounce bottle from Breeze Thru. Clear pink-purple settles ruby in the glass but looks like cough syrup when being poured. Large foamy pink head, good retention. Aroma of grapes and earth. The taste is tannic red wine, pepper, grapes. Medium bodied, mildly tart, sharp, acidic. Kind of a mess.

$2.25 bottle from Beer Run. Pours deep deep reddish brown with a dark red head. Aroma is bitter dark berry and something else I can’t quite place. Flavor is bitter blackberry, sour grapes, a bit like a turning red wine that’s not quite bad, but obviously not how it was meant to be consumed. I’m not sure about this one. Unique, that’s for sure.
