Bottle, split at Cloudwater’s new tap room. Courtesy of Connor. Cheers pal. Very dark, espresso colour. Ring of tan froth. Nose has Camp coffee. Caramel. Dark syrup. Dark, dusty cocoa bean. Smells great. Taste is caramel sweet, and burnt caramel bitter. Smooth mouthfeel. Carbonation is a little lively for style, maybe. Finish dries out, with earthy coffee and dark chocolate. Nice one. Doesn’t melt the teeth.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a 95 opacity and a sliver of pure brown head on top that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of pure coffee, earth, brown sugars, a bit of molasses, some grain and a noticeable amount of chocolate - nice and pungent throughout with a strong aroma. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich nutty and earthy flavours throughout with some cream, a good deal of chocolate and of course, even more of a coffee note with a deep bitter complexity towards the end of the juxtaposition of these flavours. Aftertaste is on the bitter side purely as a result of the coffee beans with some earth and brown/caramelised sugar flavours standing out, but this is deep and from the robust side of the coin. Overall, a nice and rich beer with the roasted malts, pure chocolate and especially deep coffee roots during the sample with some lighter sugars and a dose of earth noticeable throughout to couple with the nuts, vanilla and oak dryness. A good beer for sure, but let's not get carried away - this beer won't change your life and the cap/label aren't indications of a good beer. I'd buy this again, but not at the purchase price (and the flight home) that I spent on it. I sampled this 65cL bottle purchased from West LakeView Liqours in Chicago, Illinois on 14-November-2015 for US$11,95 sampled at home a bit more than two years later on 13-January-2018 at home in Washington, on a cold, not Chicago-cold, but especially windy, just like Chicago night in the winter.

Bottle. Pours a nearly pitch black color with a small beige head. A huge sweet coffee nose. Roast, vanilla, dominant sweet coffee, light toffee. Pretty one dimensional as intended I'm sure. Cool label. Very much a sweet coffee stout.

22 ounce bottle into signature teku glass, bottled on 10/17/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge nutty dark roast espresso, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, cream, fudge, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke, charcoal, fruit, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, espresso, and light earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big nutty dark roast espresso, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, cream, fudge, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke, charcoal, fruit, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal/woody hop and roasted coffee bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of nutty espresso, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, cream, fudge, toasted oats, dark/brown bread, light smoke/charcoal, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, espresso, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy, bready, silky, and lightly velvety mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild chalky roast, hop stickiness, and dryness. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.7%. Overall this is a fantastic coffee oatmeal stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, espresso, and light earthy hop flavors; extremely smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Far less hoppy than I expected for Three Floyds. Extremely rich/intense nutty/fruity coffee with awesome balanced oatmeal stout malt complexity. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.
