A sophisticated beer for the advanced connoisseur. It was once brewed by the English as a gift for the Russian tsarina. Today craft brewers all over the world enjoy this style because it allows them to live out all their creativity. We do this by stuffing our Imperial Stout with hops and storing it in barriques for six months before bottling it.

Vanilla and herbs, especially thyme, mingle. A gentle oily impression is followed by pine and a reoccurring herbal bouquet of thyme. The finish is soft but dry with lingering aromas of wood and black pepper.

Thank you fonefan. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ Pre-Borefts Ratebeer Tasting 2016. Black, mocha bubbles. Nose is weird sweet herbal, interesting with berries, licorice, fruity, rich malt. Taste is interesting herbal sweetness, licorice root, ginseng, lightly bitter herbal finish, quite malty. Thick licorice & herbal bitter body. Quite unique & interesting. Rather liked it.

Bottle at the pre-Borefts tasting, Den Haag, 2016. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off white head. The aroma is roasty malt, fruit, alcohol. The flavour is liquorice bitter, light sweet with a rich oily alcoholic floral, light coffee palate. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Big alcohol that totally dominates.

Bottle shared @ Borefts Pre-tasting. Red brown color, medium szied beige head. Smell and taste malts, lightly infected (don’t think that sourness is intended), somewhat bitter and some alcohol. Not good.

(Draught at Brauhaus Lemke Hackescher Markt, Berlin, 24 Aug 2016) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of liquorice, asphalt, dark chocolate, vanilla and anise. Malty, roasted taste with liquorice, black coffee, cacao, anise, treacle and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Tasty, but a bit harsh and quite sweet. A bit unbalanced, but still a nice one.
