A sophisticated beer for the advanced connoisseur. It was once brewed by the English as a gift for the Russian tsarina. Today craft brewers all over the world enjoy this style because it allows them to live out all their creativity. We do this by stuffing our Imperial Stout with hops and storing it in barriques for six months before bottling it.
Vanilla and herbs, especially thyme, mingle. A gentle oily impression is followed by pine and a reoccurring herbal bouquet of thyme. The finish is soft but dry with lingering aromas of wood and black pepper.

(Draught at Brauhaus Lemke Hackescher Markt, Berlin, 24 Aug 2016) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of liquorice, asphalt, dark chocolate, vanilla and anise. Malty, roasted taste with liquorice, black coffee, cacao, anise, treacle and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Tasty, but a bit harsh and quite sweet. A bit unbalanced, but still a nice one.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks David Cohen. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, lots of fruits (grapefruit and more), some chocolate, a bit of spiciness, and a bit of alcohol. Sweet flavor with chocolate, fruits, caramel, licorice, a bit of spiciness, and a bit of alcohol. Medium to full-bodied. A bit too alcoholic and messy.

On tap at Lemke. Dark brown with a small head. Sweet with licorice, some ash, some hops and malt. Very light roasted. The mouthfeel was also on the light side. Finish with warming alcohol.

Tap @ Lemke, Berlin 2016. Ááááá gyalázatésszégyen! Pfuj! Mint az odakozmált whisky, sörnek ilyen gyalázmány nem való. Better days.

66 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 05.06.2016
Aroma is hoppy with fruits and some licorice. Flavour has strong hoppy notes, some licorice, minerals, and hints of ash. Rather hoppy and quite thin & straightforward for this ABV. The hops do not fit perfectly here.

Bottle @ Brauhaus Lemke , Hakescher Markt & Tiergarten. Pours black with a bubbly head on top. Black tartish and burnes malts. Tart overripe fruit and wood? I had a 2nd poor from an just opened bottle and it was the same. Slick and vinous with a touch of alcohol. Not a fan.

(650ml bottle shared) Pours nearly black with a moderate off white head and loads of lace. Aroma is bright and fruity, grapefruit, mango, slight dusty roast and oak coming through while warm - rather black IPA-esque. Flavour is again very fruity, with orange, mango, maybe esters?, light chocolate and milk. Finish has citrus pith, grass/herbs and loads of almost buttery oak (like an oaked chardonnay). Fairly light in the mouth for style, light carb, and alcohol touches. Definitely different, fruity like a black IPA and oaky like a wine. Not awesome, but interesting and pretty drinkable.

Tap (Brauhaus Lemke, Berlin). Barwa ciemno brunatna, nieprzejrzysta, brazowa piana w szczatkowym wydaniu delikatnie zdobi szklo. Aromat srednio intensywny, slodkawy z nutami beczkowymi, wanilii, rumu. W smaku nuty beczkowe, drewniane na pierwszym planie, slodka wanilia i delikatna goryczka, znacznie kompensowana w odczuciu przez nuty beczkowe. Przyjemnie zalegajace a slodkawa, lekko oleista ciecz dokladnie oblepia podniebienie. Bardzo dobry imperialny stout.
