This needs some explanation. This sample, about 30 yrs of age, has been unearthed from the cellar in honour of the new Contreras 13 Pils, and because of discovering that nobody ever rated this. Today gone, it was a normal-commercially available beer in the Gavere area, Rafexport being a slightly sweeter version of the Contra Pils Mediium, bit fluffy snowwhite head, slowly fading over big-bubbled old-golden beer. Intense dry sherry-like, nutty and bit carboard nose, typical for an aged light ale or dito good lager. Sweet (indicates the export), faintly (wal)nutty-bitterish flaovur, but with lots of sweetish, bready and toasted malts behind. Oxydation, dry sherry, hazelnutoil. Low carbonation (the age!), but nowhere lame, light body. Of course, completely different from the same 30 yrs. ago. But it’s a tribute to a forgotten style, and a renewed faith in the fact that (any) good beer can be aged.
