“Green Walnut” is a surprising and innovative Lambic beer of Oud Beersel. For the production of the Green Walnut real fruit is used, in the same way as for the Oude Kriek of Oud Beersel.

In July the still green walnuts are gathered in the Oud Beersel orchard and are added to the Lambic beer that matured in wooden wine barrels.

After the bottle fermentation this sparkling walnut Lambic of Oud Beersel is called Green Walnut, which is a strong companion for blue-veined cheese, dried ham and salads with nuts.

The green walnuts macerate in the Lambic beer enabling them to unfold their taste and flavour. The initial bitterness which is extracted from the walnuts is tempered during the ripening of the walnut Lambic. This results in a delicate balance between the light sourness of the Lambic beer and the bitterness of the green walnuts. The wooden wine barrels provide a subtle touch of red fruits to the beer.

Bottle at a tasting. Not much walnut character present. Actually we are divided 50:50 between those who can and can not detect it. I can't. Otherwise a really fine lambic with moderate sourness, moderate funk of moderate intensity - maybe too much to showcase the nut. Very tasty and very good though.

Bottle. Color: Hazy orangish golden, frothy off-white head. Aroma: Combination of sweet, sour and bitter notes, fruity, funky. Taste: Moderate sweet and bitter, moderate to medium sour. Fruity lemon and green apple, funky, wood and vinuous notes. Hints of red fruit. Some flavours of the walnuts are mostly recognizable towards and at the finish. Quite nice, nicely balanced, but I expected to experience more flavours of the walnuts.

Bottle at home. 2017 edt. Gusher. The colour is slightly hazy orange with a huge head. Aroma of apple cider vinegar, barnyard, pepper, rowanberries, lemon and heather. The flavour is similar with the addition of grass. Has a silky and slightly sparkling mouth feel, medium body and a light bitterness. Fresh, balanced and easy drinking. Hard to find the walnuts.
