“Green Walnut” is a surprising and innovative Lambic beer of Oud Beersel. For the production of the Green Walnut real fruit is used, in the same way as for the Oude Kriek of Oud Beersel.

In July the still green walnuts are gathered in the Oud Beersel orchard and are added to the Lambic beer that matured in wooden wine barrels.

After the bottle fermentation this sparkling walnut Lambic of Oud Beersel is called Green Walnut, which is a strong companion for blue-veined cheese, dried ham and salads with nuts.

The green walnuts macerate in the Lambic beer enabling them to unfold their taste and flavour. The initial bitterness which is extracted from the walnuts is tempered during the ripening of the walnut Lambic. This results in a delicate balance between the light sourness of the Lambic beer and the bitterness of the green walnuts. The wooden wine barrels provide a subtle touch of red fruits to the beer.

Bottle, 75cl corked. 2016 vintage. A gusher, producing a minimal sized off-white head soon disappearing. Delicious aroma with barnyard, leather hints, lemon, woody notes and a distinct almost herbal touch I guess is due to the walnuts. It's medium to full-bodied, with a bit heavy carbonation. Dry, semi-tart and sourish, with a generic fruityness. Funky flavor with barnyard and horseblanket, herbal notes and something flowery. Wood and some rhubarb hints. Complex, a bit unusual and easy drinkable. Too much carbonation though. 189728

(Bottle, 0.75 l - BBE 15/04/2021, 2017 vintage, from Alko, 20180427) The beer poured deep golden and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had tartness, vomit, fruitiness and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were tartness, fruitiness, nuts, sweetness, sourness and bitterness. Aftertaste was tart and bitter. A different but also quite nice lambic. Some unnecessary sweetness was left.
